“The 2019 player leadership group represents a diverse group of players that each brings outstanding leadership qualities to the table,” Geelong’s general manager of football Simon Lloyd said.
“Importantly the group display the values that we should all aspire towards. This group will consistently deliver and lead the group on what the Geelong Football Club stands for.
“In addition to the group, we have a number of experienced and senior players that will continue working with our younger players as they forge their AFL careers.
“We are fortunate to have so many strong leaders within our club and we are confident this group will deliver outstanding leadership at both a team and a club level.”
Hawthorn defender Ben Stratton will lead Hawthorn in 2019.
The Hawks revealed the popular defender — who enjoyed a career-best year in 2018 — would assume the role after veteran Jarryd Roughead stood down from the role following last season.
Stratton, who turns 30 on Friday, will head a six-man leadership group after being voted into the top jobby his teammates.
Jack Gunston is vice-captain, with Isaac Smith, Ben McEvoy, Liam Shiels and Jaeger O’Meara rounding out the group.
“It’s an honour and a privilege to captain the Hawthorn Football Club,” Stratton said.
“Titles are not something that I’ve focused on in my career, but it’s a special feeling to know you’ve been backed in by your teammates and the club.
“We’ve been blessed with so many great leaders over my time at the Hawks and I’ve been able to learn so much from each of them.
“I’m lucky to have a really experienced leadership group around me and I’m excited to get stuck into season 2019 and see what we can achieve.”
Earlier this week, Scott Pendlebury moved a step closer to Collingwood’s captaincy record after being appointed for a sixth season.
Pendlebury is the club’s third-longest serving captain with 125 games, behind Nathan Buckley (161 games) and Syd Coventry (153).
The 31-year-old will lead an unchanged five-man leadership group with Steele Sidebottom reappointed as vice-captain.
Taylor Adams, Jeremy Howe and Lynden Dunn complete the group for 2019.
“It was an honour to captain Collingwood six years ago. It is still a great honour to captain Collingwood and will always be an honour,” Pendlebury said.
“Leadership isn’t an individual responsibility in team sport, though. It has to be a collective strength. A whole of squad mentality.
Collingwood’s Grand Final conqurors, West Coast, has stuck with the same leadership group that led it to the premiership with Shannon Hurn captain for a fifth straight year.
Nic Naitanui, Jeremy McGovern and Andrew Gaff remain in the leadership group.
