A common theme throughout the live chat was why Collingwood and Richmond are being so quiet.
Recap all the best questions below:
QUESTION FROM GEORGE:
Is Richmond active? Will they do very little or are they building to go bang?! Surely improving and limiting other clubs is a focus?
SAM SAYS:
Expect a very quiet period for the Tigers. Happy with picks 15/17. They met with Stringer and Schache during September, but won’t pursue either. Plenty of interest in their depth players — Lloyd, Miles etc — but I think most are keen to stay and back themselves to crack the 22 next year. Patrick Naish coming in will be a boost. He’s got a beautiful right foot.
QUESTION FROM TIM:
Why were the Pies banned from the trade period? Seems very unfair.
SAM SAYS:
Tight for cash, Timmy. Not much movement. Perhaps trying to clear some for a shot at Tom Lynch next season? Hmmm. Matty Lloyd — who watched a lot of Josh Schache as a junior — reckons he’s the perfect fit to help Darcy Moore. But it appears the Pies won’t go there. They still owe Chris Mayne another $1.5 million. Not ideal. But it’s very early, they may have a couple of surprises tucked away.
QUESTION FROM RYAN:
What are the chances Carlton will look at Josh Schache? He would fit the age group and Carlton badly need some more presence down forward!!!
SAM SAYS:
The Blues definitely need more firepower, although they do have Harry McKay coming along slowly. Reckon the Blues and Tigers showed the most interest in Schache throughout the season and Andrew McKay didn’t rule him out yesterday. But can Carlton get it done? First pick is 3 and next pick is 38 and they also need to trade for Matt Kennedy. Do, of course, have future selections too.
QUESTION FROM JAMES:
If the Dogs bring in Crozier as expected I feel they still need to find a likely type to replace Stringer and the way it’s looking, Crameri also.
They are different players to Crozier, and Bailey Dale is different again.
Are you hearing anything?
Also, do you see them making a play for Schache?
SAM SAYS:
There’s a big bloke called Tom Boyd who had a bit of a wipe-out season. You might remember him from the Grand Final, he was the hero. If he gets up and going it’ll help a fair bit. Crameri could still stay, depending on list spots. He’ll know whether there’s another contract after trade period. As will Mitch Honeychurch. Schache interest at this stage appears limited, but that can change.
QUESTION FROM RHYS:
I read below that Tom Campbell could be of interest to Brisbane. Could a package with pick 26 be something the Lions may be tempted to accept for Schache if no one is offering much more in terms of a draft selection?
SAM SAYS:
Tom Campbell and the Dogs definitely both happy to explore a trade. Brisbane seems like a logical one, but that’s joining the dots a little. To take that a step further and hypothesise a trade for Schache is getting fairly shaky. Understanding is the Dogs haven’t really considered Schache yet. There are widespread concerns over his competitiveness. That deal on the surface doesn’t seem too bad though.
QUESTION FROM CABE:
Would a pick trade with the saints work for Carlton? Pick three for seven and eight?
SAM SAYS:
The Blues would have to give back a later pick as well, and they probably don’t have one. Using the points value, picks 7/8 is worth 961 points more than pick 3 (equivalent of pick 18).
QUESTION FROM SHANE:
What are you hearing about Port’s deals especially Watts & Motlop? Do you think they will get either or both?
SAM SAYS:
At this stage it looks like the Crows have their nose in front for Motlop. Watts is hard to say because he is still meeting clubs and really unsure. But he is open to leaving Victoria, which is a good sign, and he did enjoy meeting Ken Hinkley. They’ve just landed Rockliff, which is a very nice addition.
QUESTION FROM TONY:
Will the Dogs try to get a ruckman? If so who will they try for?
SAM SAYS:
In the only move completed so far, they signed Jackson Trengove (Port). He’s the ultimate competitor and versatile big man which will help. They’ve also got Tim English coming through. He’s the perfect modern ruckman; plays like a midfielder outside of stoppages. I think that means Tom Campbell might be moved on. Brisbane looks a potential new home for Tommy.
QUESTION FROM GRAHAM:
Sam how come West Coast are not chasing Nathan Wilson or are they? He would be a perfect fit releasing Yeo to the midfield.
SAM SAYS:
Agree, Wilson would be a great fit anywhere! He can seriously play. Trouble for Freo is, GWS value him too. So they want a decent trade. I reckon that deal is a little way off.

QUESTION FROM MATTHEW:
If Luke Hodge goes to Brisbane does Hawthorn receive free agency compensation? Yes he was retiring but is reportedly looking at a 2-year deal to play and came 3rd in B & F so gives him some currency in free agency compensation calculations?
SAM SAYS:
No, Hodgey can’t be signed as a free agent because he signed Form 40 (I think that’s what it’s called?) which is a retirement form. Both clubs committed to completing a trade for Hodgey, so he doesn’t have to wait until the pre-season draft. It’ll probably look something like Luke Hodge for pick 187. Haha. Not bad for a former pick 1!
