HAWTHORN
Rated by Jon Anderson
TOM MITCHELL: 9
Typically industrious even if a lack of space forced him to operate more by hand, reducing his hurt factor.
LIAM SHIELS 7
His whole career has been about team and Thursday night was no different. No frills but total effort.
BEN STRATTON: 7
Has been making the percentage calls for most of the last decade and Thursday night was no exception until blowing his hammy.
JAEGER O’MEARA: 7
Highlighted what all the fuss was about with a clinical first half but football is all about four quarters.
RICKY HENDERSON: 7
He produced what is expected and has an admirable work ethic. Has been a useful pick-up.
ISAAC SMITH: 7
Far from his best yet was typically still running late in the game. Gets targeted more than most.
JAMES SICILY: 6
Rusty early then worked his way into the game. Played some high risk stuff but that was required.
JACK GUNSTON: 6
A better player, and more dangerous one, when he is near the goals.
JARRYD ROUGHEAD: 6
Thought he looked as lively as he has for most of the year given delivery was far from premium.
JAMES FRAWLEY: 5
Still has his one on one capabilities even if he lacks the fluency in his movement.
JARMAN IMPEY: 5
Ordinary early but to his credit worked his way into the game. Will be better for the hit-out.
BLAKE HARDWICK: 5
He was fair but has set higher standards this year that need to be met next week.
PAUL PUOPOLO 5
Typically huffed and puffed and his pressure was excellent, even if other numbers weren’t.
RYAN BURTON: 4
Got better as the night went on but he needed to. Not where he needs to be.
JAMES WORPEL: 3
Appeared over-awed at times even if he largely had a crack. Just got to keep his focus on the ball.
SHAUN BURGOYNE: 3
Missing a sitter early set the tone for a legend of the game. Had no influence.
BEN MCEVOY: 3
Like his rucking partner Ceglar, had an awful night. And he can play well in September as previously highlighted.
HARRY MORRISON: 3
Reckon this kid will be a player and Thursday night should stick with him as a learning curve.
LUKE BREUST 3
One of his worst September games which included a miss from 15m. Hard to imagine his playing that badly again.
DANIEL HOWE 3
To come in cold and pick up the game’s best midfielder was beyond him, as it would be for most.
JON CEGLAR: 3
His selection was a risk that ultimately backfired. Suspect he’s a first ruck or nothing.
CONOR NASH: 2
Has many AFL attributes but a final against maniacal pressure was a massive ask in just his fourth game.
RICHMOND
Rated by Lauren Wood
DUSTIN MARTIN 9
He attacked his 200th game like a bull and continued to astound with his freakish ability. Bring on the prelim.
ALEX RANCE 9
Truly one of the game’s greats. The anchor of the Tigers and could be thankful for the extra week’s rest after an apparent foot issue.
DANIEL RIOLI 9
It’s as if the switch flicks inside him — he knows it’s September. Rabid for the ball and incredibly dangerous in front of goal.
SHANE EDWARDS 9
Under-rated no more, the small forward showed exactly why he earned that blazer. Classy.
JOSH CADDY 8
Confident, free — everything you want in a final. Impact in spades and unlucky to miss All-Australian.
DYLAN GRIMES 8
His marking is so vital for what the Tigers do out of the back-half. Just so crafty and clever — lets nothing through.
TRENT COTCHIN 8
Captain pressure was at it again — his attack on the ball was second to none and he clears it in style.
DION PRESTIA 8
Just wears down his opponents beautifully and while not always effective, wins clearances and is simply relentless.
DAVID ASTBURY 7
Chopped and changed between Roughead and Jon Ceglar when he was sent forward. Always so reliable.
NICK VLASTUIN 7
Harder than a Cats head. The one they call “Tigger” does whatever he needs to to win the Sherrin. Tough.
BACHAR HOULI 7
A relative veteran these days but a valuable cog in the defensive machine. Steady and sturdy.
KAMDYN McINTOSH 7
The unlikeliest of heroes, but it worked. You need players like him to bob up in September.
JASON CASTAGNA 7
Castagna is his name, and pressure is his game. He’s fit beautifully into Dimma’s blueprint and his work in attack is so valuable.
JACK RIEWOLDT 7
Competed and presented when required — that’s all you can ask. Doesn’t always need to boot a bag full to make a contribution.
TOBY NANKERVIS 7
Went toe-to-toe with Ben McEvoy and Jon Ceglar and while they out-tapped him, his work around the ground is so useful.
KANE LAMBERT 7
Such a smart player who the Tigers have sorely missed. Will only grow in confidence with more games.
JAYDEN SHORT 7
That piercing long kick wasn’t given much opportunity to sing given the high intensity but he’s a tackling machine. Kept Breust quiet.
JACK HIGGINS 7
Said this week he wouldn’t be nervous and certainly didn’t look it. Enjoys his footy and is cool as.
REECE CONCA 7
Finally getting his opportunity after missing last year’s glory and is grabbing it with both hands.
SHAUN GRIGG 6
Still without a contract but did his chances no harm with a solid output.
JACK GRAHAM 5
Tackles hard but didn’t win a lot of contested ball. Can score on occasion which is an added bonus.
NATHAN BROAD 4
Keeps the pressure on but doesn’t get a lot of the footy. Turned inside out a couple of times.
