Paul Roos insists his AFL coaching days are done as Collingwood chief Eddie McGuire denies interest

PAUL Roos says he will never coach again, insisting he will spend time travelling with his wife for three months a year ruling him out of full time work.

PAUL Roos says he will never coach again, determined not to be dragged into a year of speculation.

The premiership coach has already been linked to the senior job at Collingwood in 2018, a prospect flatly denied by Pies president Eddie McGuire yesterday.

But with Nathan Buckley, Ken Hinkley and Damien Hardwick under intense pressure and Rodney Eade also feeling the heat, Roos will be linked to every vacant coaching position.

He told the Herald Sun on Wednesday that under no circumstances was he prepared to coach again after three years at Melbourne.

Paul and wife Tami Roos plan to spend October-December each year overseas, ruling him out of any coaching roles.

He said yesterday he was prepared for the speculation after he relented to Melbourne’s offer — but it wasn’t going to happen.

“On the back of what happened last time when I came back to coach Melbourne people are going to speculate, but we will be away from October to December every year travelling,” he said.

“That precludes you from doing anything in footy on a fulltime basis. That is as clear as I can be.

“We will be here most of the time during the footy season but we will take off to Hawaii at the end of every year and that’s our big plan — to spend three months over there.

“Then we will travel over (to America) to see Tami’s family. It’s more of a lifestyle change. Before we were in Sydney and had the boys in school. So there has been a shift. We are looking forward to being here the majority of the footy season with me doing some media work but in terms of full-time footy roles, those days are over.”

Paul Roos has no plans to get back in to the coaching game any time soon.

Roos is expected to again return to Fox Footy in a special comments role, which will see him constantly questioned about his future.

The 53-year-old left Melbourne in perfect position to rocket up the ladder after a list and tactical overhaul, which will only enhance his claims.

But he says even despite what is likely to be relentless speculation next year he can only hold his ground.

“I can only be up front and the speculation doesn’t worry me. My position changed when I was in Sydney by right now my lifestyle is changing.

“We will be spending time overseas in the off-season so that stops you from doing anything.”

Collingwood president McGuire yesterday rejected claims the Pies were positioning themselves to secure Roos for 2018.

Roos and Pies CEO Gary Pert are strong friends and former teammates, but McGuire said Collingwood was backing Nathan Buckley.

“No one has spoken to Paul Roos. It’s not happening,’’ he said.

“I said that’s OK that Bucks said that (about losing his job if he didn’t make finals) but we’ll make the decision on what we’re doing with the coach and we’ll take into account everything that happens,” McGuire told Triple M.

“We’re not lunatics, we’re not kneejerk, we’re not trying to drum up a headline, we wait and see what happens.

“That conversation is absolutely fine for people to speculate and talk about. But I can tell you that (discussions with Roos) hasn’t happened. Full stop.”
