CLUBS chasing Josh Kelly will need to pay top dollar both in salary cap and in a trade to secure the gun GWS midfielder.

Kelly’s trade value was a hot topic in respected recruiter Gary Buckenara’s live chat with Herald Sun readers and the former Hawks list expert gave his verdict.

“The price for Kelly will be high because he is so sought-after, not only by Melbourne-based clubs but GWS are desperate to keep him as well,” he said.

“But to get him out of GWS will require a heavy price to be paid in draft picks and market value will probably see clubs prepared to offer up what will get the deal done, which does mean, unfortunately, you can pay overs. But Kelly is a star, they are hard to find.

“I think the minimum price for Kelly will be two first-round picks plus a huge salary.”

North Melbourne has been linked to Kelly for most of the season amid reports they are offering the star a mega nine-year deal.

But any hope the Kangaroos have of using out-of-form All-Australian ruckman Todd Goldstein in addition to its first-round pick — currently No.2 — to get a deal for Kelly done is flawed according to Buckenara.

“Is Goldstein the equivalent of a first-round pick?,” Buckenara questioned.

“Let’s say North’s first pick will be fairly early by the looks — GWS will put a price on the value of that type of player they could get given they have Mumford who is a similar impact-type player that Goldstein would be.

“Would it unbalance the GWS list to have them both in the side? Most likely it would so that would reduce the value that GWS would place on Goldstein.

“If I was GWS I would be reluctant to accept that deal.”

Other topics covered include Bryce Gibbs’s trade value, Collingwood’s biggest need, what Port Adelaide should do with Jasper Pittard and potential forward targets for Richmond.
