EDDIE McGuire says the voting system for mark and goal of the year needs an overhaul.
With many left in shock that Essendon’s Joe Daniher was awarded mark of the year instead of Collingwood high-flyer Jeremy Howe, McGuire said it “left a stain” at last night’s Brownlow Medal.
McGuire said there was nothing wrong with Daniher’s towering grab against St Kilda, but believed Howe’s soaring chest mark against Melbourne should have been the mark of the year.

Howe took little time to congratulate the Bomber, via Twitter, just moments after he took to the stage at the Brownlow Medal.

“(I’m) really disappointed and so was Jeremy Howe,” McGuire said on Triple M’s The Hot Breakfast.
“He was told to sit down and be there ready to go, so you’re sort of ready (for it) to happen.”
Three finalists for mark and goal of the year are selected by Luke Darcy and the All Australian panel and then the general public votes for the winner.
“I just think that the AFL have got to stop the marketing department taking over these major awards,” he said.
“For it to go to a popular vote — ie whose got the most active cheer squad at any one stage ... Can we leave commercial activity out of it for five minutes?”
McGuire said the public got it wrong.
“It was embarrassing last night,” he said.
“There are things that are sacrosanct in this game.
“You give the mark of the year mark of the year.
“You give the goal of the year goal of the year.
“I just think it left a stain last night.“
Darcy agreed Howe’s mark was best, but said those were the pitfalls of leaving it open to public opinion.
“I clearly thought that Jeremy Howe’s mark was the best mark I’ve seen for maybe 10-years,” Darcy said.
“I was a bit surprised watching that last night, but yeah, you hand it over to the popular vote I suppose, that’s how it can work, it’s a bit like the Logies.”

Jeremy Howe looked as sour as an oyster sucking a lemon when he got robbed of the Mark of the Year. Fair enough too

Might be the last year the public gets to vote on goal and mark of the year, I'd say

How did Howe miss out with one of the best marks of the modern era? Nothing against Joe (amazing grab) but time for a panel to judge MOTY. pic.twitter.com/GhsH8SUKNc
