MARK Knight is torn.

A die-hard Sydney Swans fan, the Herald Sun cartoonist would also love to see the Western Bulldogs break their premiership drought.

The iconic premiership poster - introduced by William Ellis Green, aka WEG - first appeared after Footscray’s 1954 victory and Knight paid homage to that design with this year’s poster.

“I looked at the 1954 poster - it’s basically just a big head with a bone - and I tried to pay homage to that,” he said.

“WEG’s first poster was in 1954 when the Dogs won and it would be a nice circle if they got up.

“The Doggies poster rolled straight off the pen, we’re carrying on the legacy of WEG and even though I’ve got a different style I want to carry on that tradition.

“When people see it, they just smile, which is nice.”

Knight has drawn his Swans twice before, a winning poster in 2012 and again in 2014 that went unused.

The award-winning cartoonist said it was a little more stressful this year.

“I’ve drawn them before and it’s a bit like Hawthorn, you think ‘where can I go with this?’,” he said.

“When I was drawing my first one in 2012 it was really enjoyable but this year has been quite stressful because of the Dogs.

The winning team’s poster will be available immediately after the Grand Final at the MCG, with all proceeds donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
