Herald Sun cartoonist Mark Knight reveals Richmond Tigers, Adelaide Crows premiership poster designs

WILL the Tigers roar or the Crows fly high? Mark Knight has revealed his 2017 premiership poster designs that every fan will want on victory at the final siren.

IT may have been a long time between premierships for both Richmond Tigers and Adelaide Crows fans, but Herald Sun cartoonist Mark Knight is equally excited to have drawn the teams as premiers for the first time.

The iconic premiership poster was the brainchild of cartoonist William Ellis Green — aka WEG — and first appeared after Footscray’s 1954 victory.

Knight took over drawing them in 2009 after WEG’s death, and the premiership poster remains the only one officially endorsed by the AFL.

Only the winning team’s poster will be available immediately after the Grand Final at the MCG, with all proceeds donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Knight said his inspiration for this year’s Grand Final teams came easily.

“I wanted the Tiger to not only look powerful, but I wanted it to look excited and a little bit like Richmond saying ‘we’re here, we can’t believe it — wow I’m in the Grand Final’.

“And the Tiger is doing the ‘Don’t Argue’ hand out as homage to Dusty (Martin).

“The Crow, well there’s a bit of the Eddie Betts fantastic tongue there.

“They have led all year, they are the minor premiers, so they have got their claws on the Cup — but they are not quite there yet.”

And it wouldn’t be a Mark Knight drawing without an appearance and comment from his cartoon regular, Pig.

“Pig is paying tribute to Phil Walsh, the former Crows coach, saying ‘This one’s for Walshy’; and on Tigers he’s simply saying ‘Yellow and Black’.”

Does Knight have a tip for Saturday’s big clash?

“I think for the sake of Melbourne’s health and safety, Go Tiges!”
