Hawthorn star Jaeger O’Meara laughs off Wayne Carey criticism, says Hawks happy to be boring

Wayne Carey might think they’re the “most boring team in the competition” but Hawks midfielder Jaeger O’Meara isn’t so sure. However they look, Hawthorn is just happy to be winning.

Hawthorn star Jaeger O’Meara has brushed aside comments from legend Wayne Carey labelling the Hawks the most “boring” side in the AFL.

Carey took aim at the Hawks after its win over GWS Giants on Sunday, in which a crowd of just over 14,000 fans attended.

While club president Jeff Kennett hit out at the fixturing, Carey suggested Hawks fans were instead sick of watching their team’s “terribly boring” style of play.

“I would say, you know all the Hawthorn supporters and Alastair Clarkson, you’re a marvel, you’ve been a great team, but you’re now the most boring team in the competition, that no-one wants to watch,” Carey said on Seven’s Talking Footy.

“I actually walked out of the ground, ran into a lot of Hawthorn supporters who were very happy that they won, but they thought the game was a terrible game to watch, terribly boring … do you really want to go and watch that?”

Speaking on Tuesday, O’Meara said he was happy to wear the label if the results stacked up.

“I’m not too sure about that (being boring),” he said.

“I think on the weekend we played with a lot of spirit and energy.

“We have a lot of younger guys now so I’m not too sure about boring.

“But if we did look boring on the weekend then I’m happy to be boring because we had a really good win.”

Ninth-placed Hawthorn face Richmond at the MCG on Sunday, and O’Meara said he was confident his side could get another big scalp with the right attitude.

“It’s hard to get a read on any of the teams in the comp to be honest,” he said.

“But I think when we bring that energy and spirit — which we did against Adelaide in Round 1 and then on the weekend — I think we can match it with anyone on our day.

“It is just ups and down throughout the games and week to week that we’re struggling with a little bit at the moment, so hopefully we can bring that this week against Richmond.”
