GREATER Western Sydney has played it second consecutive draw after failing to stop an 11th hour resurgence by Hawthorn in Launceston.

The Giants led by two goals in time-on but the Hawks fought their way back into the contest until they tied the scores at 14.13 (97) to GWS 15.7 (97) with a Will Langford goal at the 32-minute mark.

When the ball returned to the centre with only seconds left to play, the Hawks surged forward knowing a behind would clinch it.

When Hawk Ryan Burton punched the ball through for a point the Hawk army raised the roof in jubilation, only to be stunned into silence.

The siren had sounded before the ball crossed the line — but it could not be heard in the roar from the stands.

The umpires at first looked confused and it appeared Launceston was about to experience a Siren Gate sequel, following the original between St Kilda and Fremantle at the same ground in 2006.

The umpires were in no doubt, and when they tucked the football under an arm and walked off the field, it left the fans and the players stunned.

“We were hoping that when Shaun kicked that goal to start the last quarter it might have been enough,” said Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson.

“They’re a high quality side and they sit top of the ladder for a reason and we knew they were going to come back hard and they did.”

The draw cost GWS top spot on the ladder.

It pulled equal with Adelaide on 44 points but the Crows superior percentage has them in the top slot.

Bigman Jon Patton booted five goals, including two in five minutes in the final term as the Giants kicked five unanswered majors for a 12 point lead.

The battle in the midfield was titanic, particularly with Hawk Tom Mitchell gathering 39 possessions and Giant Josh Kelly 34.
