Friends Rory Buggle and Bill Peacock might be the most underqualified hopefuls to enter the mid-season draft

The mid-season draft is a chance for hungry footballers to chase their one in a hundred draft dream. But for Rory Buggle and Bill Peacock, their chances might be closer to one in a billion. Meet the AFL’s most underqualified draft hopefuls.

The mid-season draft is all about giving hungry footballers a chance to realise their dreams.

And it doesn’t matter if the odds are one in a hundred or one in a million — if you’re saying there’s a chance, then the dream is well and truly alive.

However, when it comes to draft hopefuls Rory Buggle, 19, and Bill Peacock, 18, there is no way to sugarcoat it. They fall into the one in a billion category.

Despite having no NAB League, VFL or even high level school football experience, the St Kevins Old Boys duo decided to “shoot their shot” by applying for last year’s AFL draft.

GUIDE: WHAT EVERY CLUB NEEDS IN THE MID-SEASON DRAFT

“We saw (the application) on the AFL website and we thought, surely it’s not that easy. Surely these no-name kids can’t just put their hat in the ring. But it turns out, it is that easy,” Buggle explained.

In one of draft night’s great plot twists, they were somehow overlooked in both the national and rookie drafts but despite the setback, they remained undeterred.

So when the follow up email came from AFL HQ asking them if they wanted to also put their hands up for the mid-season draft, there was no hesitation.

The problem was this time they were two of only 307 nominees, and there was no hiding as their names began popping up all over the internet.

From there, the fines and sledges from their St Kevins teammates started rolling in.

“I’ve been fined a lot of money by the team. All for following my dream and going for this,” Buggle joked.

“If I drop an easy chest-mark in a game, all I keep hearing is ‘draftee, draftee’. There is a lot of stuff like that.”

But did the prank go even further than the clubrooms at St Kevins?

There has been speculation within the club that a couple of recruiters did their due diligence on these potential wildcards from the VAFA.

“There have been some rumours circulating around the club that there was a Bulldogs scout at the under 19s game,” Buggle said.

“I’m not even in that team so I’ve got no idea. There were some other people saying St Kilda called the club but we don’t know if that is true or not.”

For any club still searching for the teenagers, they can be found playing in the under 19 division 4 grade on a Saturday.

As for the scouting report:

“We are both outside players I feel. I take the kick-ins so that is pretty much where I get my touches,” Buggle joked.

“As far as career highlights, I’d say playing with my mates against the year 12s when we were in year 11, which was also on my birthday.

“It was a 140-point loss but it was good fun.”
