Palmer, 30, remains in a stable condition, but lost his spleen and suffered heavy internal bleeding after the collision with a car in Perth on Saturday night.

The Swan Districts Football Club put out a statement confirming Palmer’s condition had improved.

“Rhys has been in and out of an induced coma which is helping his body recover from the significant trauma,” it said.

“He has been able to provide a limited but positive response to his father. His very close family have been by his side throughout the ordeal.”

Swan Districts’ chief executive Jeff Dennis said Palmer tried to help others in the immediate aftermath of the crash.

The female passenger Palmer was driving escaped without serious injury.

“A witness at the accident has contacted the club to say that immediately after the accident Rhys was more concerned for everyone else rather than himself,” Dennis said.

“This is testament to his character”.
