Collingwood midfielder Dayne Beams is in danger of missing the rest of the season after surgery to repair a little-known hip problem.
The Magpies on Tuesaday night confirmed the star recruit will go under the knife after battling the debilitating hip injury for the past few weeks.
Beams, 29, is expected to miss about three months of football and will be in a race against time to regain full fitness in time for finals.
The major blow is expected to open up an opportunity for in-form ballwinner Brayden Sier who is in-line to play his first game of the season against Melbourne in Monday’s Queen’s Birthday clash at the MCG.

Sier, 21, had 36 possessions and 10 clearances as part of an excellent performance in the VFL at the weekend.
Collingwood said the decision to have surgery “may enable Beams to play again in 2019”.
“Dayne has been battling with the injury for a number of weeks and it has reached the stage where it is affecting his ability to train, to run out games and his form generally,” football manager Geoff Walsh said.
“Dayne saw a surgeon a couple of weeks ago. It was agreed then to push on but it has since become clear that the situation isn’t helping Dayne perform as he and we would like.
“The hope is that with a general clean-up and a smooth rehabilitation he will have the time to return late in the season.”
Beams struggled in the loss to Fremantle on Saturday, gathering only 14 possessions, after managing 22 touches the week before against Sydney Swans.
It is a setback for the former Brisbane Lions’ captain who returned to Collingwood last season in exchange for two first-round draft picks.
Sier has been locked out of the Magpies’ bolstered midfield group this season amid some niggly injuries including a toe problem.
But the No.32 draft pick will now have a huge opportunity to play a key role in the Magpies’ quest to secure a top-four berth over the back half of the season.
“He is going really well, the ‘Bear’ and his time is just around the corner at AFL level,” Collingwood performance and strategy manager Marcus Wagner said.
“We know when he comes up he will get the job done.”
Star ruckman Brodie Grundy rolled his ankle in the shock loss to the Dockers last weekend and will face some tests on the joint at training this week.
Jordan De Goey also received medical treatment on his troublesome calves and spent half the last quarter on the bench as he manages the ongoing issue.
Spearhead Mason Cox will also push for a return from an ankle injury. He has not played since Round 6.
