Carlton keen to lure Sydney goalkicker Tom Papley but Swans star contracted until 2023

Carlton’s bid to lure Tom Papley looks a tough ask given the Swans goalkicker’s 2019. And Jon Ralph reports Sydney has some big decisions to make on other out-of-contract stars.

Sydney is adamant it will not trade star goalkicker Tom Papley to Carlton under any circumstances.

The Blues were shunted out of the race for Stephen Coniglio on Tuesday and a day later had to accept the reality a trade with Papley might be uncommonly hard.

Not only has he hit a trigger clause in his contract which will extends from 2020 to 2023, Sydney is in no mood to trade him while under contract.

Papley played 42 games in the past two seasons, which means Sydney has him locked away for four more seasons.

Many players are traded in contract and Carlton believes he is extremely keen to join them after kicking 37.28 this season.

But Sydney seems genuine their position is not an ambit claim or the start of negotiations, instead it is an emphatic position from which they will not waver.

Sydney is also trying to retain the services of Zak Jones, who will meet his manager Tom Petroro to discuss his future despite being linked to the Saints.

And it has to make a call on players including Daniel Menzel, who is yet to be offered a new deal at Sydney.

The Swans continue to maintain they are not after Essendon’s Joe Daniher, more intent on retaining their star-studded young list after an exceptional year of growth for John Longmire’s young cygnets.
