Hogan was delivered the bad news after a visit to a Melbourne specialist on Friday, the consult revealing his troublesome injury to the navicular in his right foot — suffered in 2018 while playing for the Demons — had flared up again.

Dockers football boss Peter Bell confirmed the 24-year-old would require surgery to correct the injury.

“Jesse has suffered a recurrence of the injury to the navicular bone in his right foot,” Bell told the club’s website.

“He will undergo surgery and then undertake a recovery and rehabilitation program with an estimated time frame, at this stage, of 16 weeks.

“It was initially believed that Jesse had suffered an unrelated sprain in his right foot in our Round 14 game against Melbourne, but subsequent scans and further examination by a specialist confirmed a recurrence of the injury to the navicular bone.”

Bell said the news comes at the worst possible time, with Hogan “really starting to hit his straps and gel with our restructured forward line”.

“It is very disappointing for him and the club,” Bell said.

“However, based on medical advice we are confident that, with a cautiously mapped out rehabilitation program, Jesse should be available in round one of the 2020 season.

“In the meantime, we will wrap our arms around Jesse and provide all the necessary support required for him to successfully complete the rehabilitation phase.”

Hogan was the Dockers’ prized recruit last off-season and, after a delayed start, had strung together 12 of 13 games before going down on June 22 in the rematch with his old club.

He finishes with 13 goals for the season.
