Zaharakis, 29, had the wound bandaged up on the bench and returned to the field, but the laceration became infected in recent days.

He was advised to go to hospital for antibiotics to combat the infection and was absent from the club yesterday.

While the Bombers will monitor the midfielder’s condition closely, club officials yesterday said they still expected him to be available for Friday’s clash.

Zaharakis has hit red-hot form over the past fortnight, helping spark the resurgent Bombers to back-to-back wins over Melbourne and Brisbane.

Collingwood will be without wingman Chris Mayne for “a couple of weeks” after scans revealed a small fracture to a bone in his back.

Mayne copped a knee to the back in the opening minutes of Friday night’s win over the Bulldogs and took no further part in the game.

He was sent to hospital for scans post-game, which revealed the extent of the injury.

Coach Nathan Buckley confirmed his key link man won’t play against Brisbane on Easter Thursday night and will be missing for some time.

“He’s really sore. The thing that causes the discomfort and pain is the spasms that happen around that injury,” Buckley said on SEN.

“He’ll miss a couple of weeks and it will be how he comes to hand.

“How freely he can move over the next couple of weeks.”

Greater Western Sydney has been dealt a major injury blow with scans confirming co-captain Callan Ward has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Playing his first game back from a separate knee injury, Ward immediately reached for his knee after his legs twisted awkwardly in a tackle.

Ward had scans on his knee on Sunday, with the results confirming the club’s worst fears.

He will meet with a surgeon in coming days before undergoing a knee reconstruction.

“This is obviously devastating news for Callan who is a tremendous leader of our club,” Giants football boss Wayne Campbell said.

“His character and leadership of the club is highly valued and I have no doubt he’ll continue to play a very important role in the coming months.

“As is the case with every player that suffers an injury, Callan has the full support of the club and the wider football community and we look forward to seeing him return to the field down the track.”

The injury occurred in the opening minutes of the clash against Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

Ward had strapping on one of his knees already — his right — but the fresh injury is to his left knee.

The co-captain emerged from the rooms midway through the opening term on crutches and sat on the bench before breaking down in tears.

Ward had to be consoled by medical staff.

ADELAIDE

Sam Jacobs bung knee will keep him out for at least another week, leaving Riley O’Brien to the ruck duties again.

Not a lot went right for the Crows against North Melbourne as coach Don Pyke tries to nut out exactly what is going wrong. Unfortunately against the Roos, it was ball movement, it was structure — it was key pillars that have left them out of their groove and languishing at 1-3.

He says there won’t be “massive wholesale changes”, but something has to change — and quickly.

“There’s going to be a few late nights this week, but we need to get ourselves playing some good footy,” he said.

“We’ve got to roll up our sleeves and go to work.

“There’s no easy way out of this. At the moment, we’ve got some work to do.”

Bryce Gibbs could return this week, while Hugh Greenwood performed strongly in the SANFL and could regain his spot.

BRISBANE LIONS

I’ve seen Chris Fagan grumpier after wins. No one likes to lose but it’s hard to escape the impression the result against Essendon was easier to swallow than most others for Fagan. Obviously he’d be content to carry on clocking up Ws but sloppiness was slipping into the Lions’ play and this gives him a chance to hammer his point home to his young side. Fagan shut down a question asking if the players got ahead of themselves after a 3-0 start to the season. However, there is no doubt the club did. All the talk from the administration throughout last week was about the Easter Thursday clash with Collingwood. It alarmed the football department who knew the danger of looking beyond the upcoming opponent to the game that followed, and they went to lengths to address that with the players. The lack of footspeed in their defence was exposed by Essendon and it was interesting that nippy draftee Noah Answerth, who the club rate very highly, was taken off the ground in the NEAFL at three-quarter time. Could they be ensuring he was fresh for an Easter Thursday AFL debut?

CARLTON

It is no comfort to Brendon Bolton but Carlton’s clash with the Suns could have gone either way. Last year the Suns gave him the circuit breaker he desperately needed when they followed the best win in club history over the Sydney Swans with a stinker against the last-placed Blues. With less than a minute to go it looked like history would repeat and Bolton could finally breathe easier. Unfortunately a Jack Bowes snap with 13 seconds to go was the difference between the two sides in which the mistakes and skill errors were the major talking point. What will be a comfort is that No.1 draft pick Sam Walsh (back) and key position player Mitch McGovern (ankle), who both required treatment during the game, have been given a clear bill of health.

COLLINGWOOD

After missing last week with a virus, Dayne Beams is expected to take on his old Brisbane Lions side on Easter Thursday at the Gabba. Chris Mayne’s 200th game lasted just minutes and he was hospitalised with a back injury. Matches on April 12, 18 and 25 (Anzac Day) will test the club’s conditioning program, but Buckley said his professionally-minded mob would relish the challenge. Daniel Wells got through his VFL return and kicked a nice goal to start the last quarter but still looked a yard off the pace. He will need an extended run in the reserves before he can be considered. Ben Reid, opposed to Lewis Young, booted a pair of third-quarter goals courtesy of free kicks but doesn’t appear to be in senior consideration. Brayden Sier impressed on return but with Beams to come into a winning midfield he also looks unlikely to play against the Lions. The VFL Pies were smashed by Footscray, too, which won’t help their chances.

ESSENDON

Welcome back, Bombers. Essendon has roared back to a 2-2 record and its season is right back on track after dismantling the Lions. And things are looking up.

Joe Daniher will almost certainly resume from his calf injury next week, but coach John Worsfold says a decision on whether he plays in the Good Friday AFL match against North Melbourne or in the VFL won’t be made until mid-week.

“There are a few things we have got to cover off there,” Worsfold said of Daniher. “We are confident he (Daniher) will be available to play next week ... but if he doesn’t get up for the AFL team, he will be right to play in the VFL.”

David Myers (broken nose) and David Zaharakis (puncture to his knee) were casualties against the Lions.

Both will be assessed through the week ahead of what Worsfold says is an “absolute privilege” to play on Good Friday to help raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal.

Fremantle pushed West Coast throughout the second half without sidelined skipper Nat Fyfe and after the loss of defender Joel Hamling to another concussion in the second quarter.

The Dockers won three of the four quarters and had 21 scoring shots to West Coast’s 19.

Hamling was ruled out of the match after suffering a concussion in the second quarter and he is in doubt to face the Giants. The Dockers will fly out on Thursday.

“I didn’t really see the incident. I think he’s hit his head on the turf and got some blurred vision,” Ross Lyon said after the match.

GEELONG

The Cats have only used 23 players in the opening month but coach Chris Scott predicted it was unrealistic for that trend to continue after their first loss to the season against GWS.

Once again they appeared to have got through unscathed which means it will fall on the selection committee to decide what changes are required.

While Brownlow Medal favourite Patrick Dangerfield will be looked at by the MRP for an off-the-ball incident with Giants tagger Matt De Boer, the minimal contact involved would earn a fine at worst under the current system.

Midfielder Cam Guthrie is the most likely inclusion for the Easter Monday clash with Hawthorn. He has been battling a calf problem but was named to play in the VFL on Sunday.

GOLD COAST

Gold Coast will be searching for a new wingman for next weekend’s trip to Adelaide with doubt surrounding Wil Powell. Powell suffered a concussion late in the second quarter of Gold Coast’s two-point win over Carlton at Metricon Stadium after being pinned and slung to the turf by Will Setterfield. The 19-year-old didn’t return to the field and will have to undergo concussion protocols through the week. Luckily for Gold Coast they look set to welcome back former Geelong player George Horlin-Smith. GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY

A terrible blow for the Giants with captain Callan Ward suffering a serious knee injury just six minutes into the game.

Ward was playing his first game for the season against the Cats after an injury to his right knee in the pre-season had kept him sidelined for a month.

This time it was his left knee which gave way as he tried to avoid a Gary Ablett tackle.

Ward and coach Leon Cameron were bracing themselves for the worst post-game with scans today expected to confirm the worst.

Cameron listed youngsters Aiden Bonar, Jackson Hately, Nick Shipley and Xavier O’Halloran as players who could come in for Ward, while matchwinner Toby Greene is expected to return next week against Fremantle.

Greene has not played since round one as he deals with a calf injury.

“He’s running really well. I’ve just got to be mindful it’s a really long season. If it’s not next week [that he’s back] it’ll be the week after,” Cameron said.

“If it gets to Wednesday [and] he’s going well, he’ll put his hand up and want to play. I’ve found that this year, though, by holding (Josh) Kelly back, and we gave ‘Wardy’ an extra week, we’ve got to continue to look at that.”

HAWTHORN

The Hawks’ medical team are in overdrive. Already hit hard by a significant injury list, Alastair Clarkson lost another two key players in the five-point loss to the Saints. Full back James Frawley injured his hamstring and faces three or four matches on the sidelines, while captain Ben Stratton also went off in the third term with concussion. But there are added problems. Connor Nash struggled on Sunday with a corked buttock, Isaac Smith hurt his hand and James Cousins rolled his ankle. They will certainly have a light week on the track in the lead-up to the Easter Monday blockbuster against the Cats. Jaeger O’Meara was a late withdrawal on Sunday with a hip issue, but should be fit to play next weekend. Liam Shiels and Shaun Burgoyne won’t be available as they try and overcome hamstring injuries. The injury-hit Hawks face a huge test in the midfield against the Cats on Monday.

MELBOURNE

Melbourne cleared Braydon Preuss of serious injury after he hurt his AC joint in the final seconds of the first quarter at the SCG.

The club will now hope Preuss can use a nine-day break to recover in time to take on St Kilda next Saturday.

Defender Oscar McDonald should be fit to take on the Saints despite finishing the game on the bench with concussion.

Jordan Lewis completed a significant training session late last week after a four-week hamstring injury, and should be available if he pulls up well.

Jeff Garlett showed he still has plenty to offer Melbourne in Casey’s pummelling of North Melbourne in the VFL.

Garlett was at his best in the Dees’ forward line, finishing with 18 disposals, five tackles and three goals.

Following AFL exposure in the first two rounds of the season, Tom Sparrow was given the job on prolific midfielder Dom Tyson.

Harrison Petty was best-on-ground for the Dees, keeping last season’s leading goal kicker Nick Larkey to three goals, while Tim Smith continued to build his form coming back from a calf injury and finished the game with 17 touches, seven tackles and two goals.

NORTH MELBOURNE

Finally they’re on the board and the Kangaroos will take confidence from being able to capture their defensive prowess for more than just glimpses.

Their ability to stymie Adelaide’s ball movement proved valuable on Saturday night, especially when they were struggling to score.

Accuracy in front of goal needs to be worked on, but coach Brad Scott is right — sometimes getting that many shots is the battle.

But while there was a lot to work on, there was a lot to like.

“It’s a relief, because the pressure builds on everyone,” he said.

“That’s just natural, because it’s an intense competition and you don’t want the competition to get too far away from you either — but the competition’s pretty tight.

“There’s going to be a lot to play out in terms of 2019. The challenge for us, while it’s probably easy to say, is to keep building the style of footy we want to play.

“We saw glimpses of it in round two, we saw patches of it in round three, but we had a more complete performance and better consistency of effort over four quarters tonight.”

Shaun Higgins split his lip but played on, while Luke McDonald received treatment in periods on his lower leg.

The Kangas’ VFL side was beaten by nine goals by Casey, and a suspected serious leg/foot injury to Ben McKay rubbed salt into wounds.

Tom Campbell was one shining light for the Roos, the ruckman finishing the 54-point loss with 63 hit-outs, 19 disposals, eight tackles and two goals.

PORT ADELAIDE

After Port Adelaide went into Saturday’s game against Richmond unchanged, Power coach Ken Hinkley hinted that changes could be afoot as they prepare to head west to Optus Stadium to take on a flying Eagles outfit.

“We’ll look at who’s available and what’s available to us,” he said after his side’s seven-point loss to the Tigers at Adelaide Oval.

“Every side does that whether you win or lose, you look at your opportunities to improve and we won’t be any different.”

Hamish Hartlett is still some weeks away, however, after his much-anticipated comeback from a knee reconstruction was further thwarted by hamstring soreness.

Hinkley said Harlett wouldn’t play in Port’s SANFL reserves side on Sunday and was still some weeks away from a senior recall.

“He’s still two or three weeks away from being ready for AFL football I’d imagine,” Hinkley said.

But Port will likely stick with its youth, despite both rising star Conor Rozee and Zac Butters having quiet games on Saturday.

“To be fair, all of our young boys (who faced Richmond) get an opportunity to learn and they understand the speed of the game and it keeps getting quicker and quicker ... but people are starting to watch them now and put some real heat on them and they are starting to feel that.

“And that’s OK. They’ll be fine. They’ll get better.”

RICHMOND

Six changes, none of the ‘Big Four’ and on the road in front of a hostile crowd at Adelaide Oval.

Yet, Richmond found a way against Port Adelaide on Sunday in one of its most brave performances in recent years.

Missing captain Trent Cotchin and vice-captains Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt – as well as Brownlow medalist Dustin Martin – stand-in skipper Shane Edwards and his deputy Dylan Grimes stood tall to help the Tigers get over the line in the final term.

On debut, Jack Ross shone brightly with 25 disposals including 16 in the first half and key forward Tom Lynch is quickly becoming the player Richmond hoped he would after a six-goal performance.

The forward pressure game was also back, while Josh Caddy’s return from an ankle complaint made a difference in attack.

The news looks like getting better for the 2-2 Tigers ahead of their Round 5 clash with Sydney at Marvel Stadium, too.

Martin will return from suspension, defender Bachar Houli should be back from a hamstring and Jack Riewoldt is in the mix to return from a wrist injury after missing the past two matches.

Ruckman Ivan Soldo and young midfielders Patrick Naish and Riley Collier-Dawkins were Richmond’s best in a VFL win over Port Melbourne on Saturday.

ST KILDA

The Saints announced today Logan Austin will have shoulder surgery and will miss an indefinite period.

This is where we take our hats off to the Saints. Not many gave them much of a chance to play finals this year, and despite a slew of major injuries, they have made a strong start to the season. They are without Jake Carlisle (back), Dan Hannebery (legs), Dylan Roberton (heart), Paddy McCartin (concussion) and Jack Steven (mental health) yet sit 3-1 after four rounds. And the midfield stood up big-time against the Hawks yesterday, outlasting them in the fourth-term, kicking three goals-to-nil. Seb Ross was massive, Jack Billings is becoming the star we thought he could and Jack Steele is as tough as they come. If only they could kick straight. Jarryn Geary didn’t play in the five-point win over the Hawks because he was a late withdrawal due to illness. Daniel McKenzie was concussed in the second term. The bookies don’t give the Saints much of a chance to beat Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday, but that’s probably the way the Saints like it. They have only won one of their past four games at the MCG.

SYDNEY

It was noticeable against Melbourne that Lance Franklin, always the focus of the Swans’ attacking forays, had a couple of shots at goal fall short. Is that off-season groin injury hindering his kicking penetration?

Buddy still doesn’t look anywhere near 100 per cent fit, but John Longmire has bigger problems.

“It’s pretty hard to win a game of footy when you play for 65 minutes,” Longmire said after the game.

Jarrad McVeigh’s absence was sorely felt, while Sydney needs more from Sam Reid and Tom McCartin.

A re-energised Richmond awaits the Swans at the MCG, before the local derby with the flying Giants. At 1-3, things could quickly get away from the perennial finalists unless they can swiftly reverse their current form.

WEST COAST

It got a little tight late in the match but for the most part, this was a relatively stress free win for the Eagles against their cross town rivals. On the injury front, West Coast lost Lewis Jetta before the game with hamstring tightness. He will be touch and go for this week against Port Adelaide. Young forward Oscar Allen was left dazed after a collision with Josh Kennedy. He will be monitored throughout the week. After missing Saturday night’s clash, Liam Duggan could be in the mix for a return. Could Chris Masten be in trouble? He managed a respectable 16 disposals but when you bat as deep as the Eagles, the pressure for a spot in the final 22 is at a premium.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

The Bulldogs are looking increasingly healthy, with Lin Jong, Tom Boyd, Jason Johanissen and Jackson Trengove all making returns at AFL and VFL level on Friday.

But Fergus Greene wasn’t so lucky, with the developing forward leaving the Dogs VFL match at Olympic Park on Friday on crutches and in tears with what could be a serious leg injury.

Trengove is a curious case having been promoted to the leadership group over summer, but not deemed good enough to get a game in the ruck, where the developing Tim English was destroyed by Brodie Grundy.

The side is also crying out for another key forward to complement Aaron Naughton, but Luke Beveridge says Boyd is a “long way off” being that person.
