FORMER Melbourne cult hero Allen Jakovich has recalled the day he taunted champion defender Mick Martyn, coming good on his vow to make the fullback “look silly”.

Jakovich, who booted 208 career goals from just 54 matches in a six-season career with the Demons (47 matches) and Footscray, was one of the AFL’s most exciting talents — renowned for his freakish talents and skill on both sides of his body around goal.

He burst onto the AFL scene in 1991 after starring for Woodville in the SANFL, being dropped after a goalless season-opener against West Coast before winning his way back into the seniors with a series of dominant displays at reserves level.

But it was his Round 20 effort against North Melbourne on footy’s most hallowed turf that sticks in the memories of most Demons fans — and the man himself.

Jakovich booted an incredible 11.8 from 22 disposals — all kicks — and 14 marks.

The Demons won by 52 points as Jakovich, then 23, ran rings around Martyn who was one of the game’s best fullbacks.

“He told me how he was going to knock my ears off,” Jakovich told Channel 7’s The Front Bar of his battle with Martyn.

“He told me he was going to knock my ears off, I think I might have kicked one or two, the confidence was up and I said to Mick, ‘Don’t worry about knocking my ears off, I’m going to make you look silly today’.

“As the game went on Mickey got quieter and quieter. I geed him up. I said ‘That bloke in yellow (the runner) is coming to get you’. (Then) he started running towards us (and I said) ‘Look, here he comes. See you Mick!’

Jakovich was also booked for using abusive language to umpire Peter Cameron on the day he destroyed the Kangas.

“I had a good day that day.”

Jakovich, during his remarkable streak in front of goal, was one of the game’s most exciting talents before back and groin injuries ended his career prematurely.

But there were plenty of highlights.

Jakovich also told of:

THE DAY HE HAD TO BE ESCORTED INFURIATED COLLINGWOOD FANS:

“Halftime we were walking through the race, I had one of the old Gatorade bottles with the big stem coming out of them and it was sort of pointing straight at these Collingwood supporters as I was going up the race. They were eating their pies, and I just couldn’t resist. (I had) this insatiable urge to just squeeze. And of course it covered them. I don’t know what the (coach’s) address was at halftime or what the message was for the second half, but all I was worried about was getting out of that race. And I thought to myself ‘they are going to be waiting for me’. I thought I would stick to the right, because they were on the left, and then I thought they might be waiting for me on the right-hand side. So I might go to the left. But being Collingwood supporters I thought, ‘No, they’re not that bright. I’ll stick to the right’. Sure enough they were clawing, they were clawing at me and spitting, but …”

THE CURRENT DEMON HE LOVES TO WATCH:

“Clayton Oliver is special. He is special, there is something about him that just he’s got that bit of mongrel about him as well. He’s got all the skills to back it up. Jesse (Hogan) too, I hope he can just break out and start kicking some goals and want to kick goals and not give it off all the time.”

THE DAY HE PLAYED ON BROTHER AND EAGLES CHAMP GLEN — AND WHY HE KISSED HIM ON THE CHEEK:

“The first shot (at goal) I had, I missed. The second one, well we were four points behind and I needed to kick it. Glen of course is reciting this scene from The Exorcist. Jimmy Stynes has walked past and he was horrified, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. I kicked it (and then kissed him on the cheek). It wasn’t planned.
