AFL teams: Round 16 line-ups and SuperCoach scores

Max who? Melbourne has a gem in ruckman Braydon Preuss and anyone who took a SuperCoach punt on the towering big man amid Gawn’s late withdrawal for the Dees was richly rewarded. ROUND 16 SUPERCOACH SCORES

Melbourne ruckman Braydon Preuss has churned out a massive SuperCoach score after being a late call up for the injured Max Gawn.

The Demons confirmed on Sunday morning Gawn — who features in 107,531 SuperCoach teams — had been replaced by fellow big man Preuss.

It was expected Gawn would withdraw after he failed to train on Saturday, although the Demons gave him every chance to prove his fitness.

The star ruckman has averaged 125 points per game and his absence will leave many coaches relying on Reilly O’Brien, Zac Clarke, Justin Westhoff or Scott Lycett.

The Port Adelaide pair both scored tons in their side’s showdown victory, while O’Brien managed 79 points.

But Preuss — or his opponent Matthew Kreuzer — provided huge scores.

ROUND 16 TEAMS — and SUPERCOACH SCORES

All times AEST

Heroes: A memo to Alastair Clarkson from all SuperCoaches — please leave James Sicily in defence. Sicily was back to his best in Hawthorn’s win on Friday, recording 141 SuperCoach points after collecting 28 disposals and 14 marks. Brodie Grundy was the hero for those who had the VC on him, bucking a trend against Ben McEvoy with a huge outing and 145 points. Those who still have Darcy Moore would have been celebrating after he amassed 103.

Villains: Hard to fault many of those we expect big numbers from, although James Worpel’s 71 was below par for a player who has consistently scored between 80 and 100 this season. Adam Treloar started in a blaze of glory and looked set for a huge score but his owners had to settle for 100.

ESSENDON v SYDNEY SWANS

Heroes: When Isaac Heeney and Jake Lloyd score well, thousands of coaches celebrate. It hasn’t happened regularly this season due to Heeney’s inconsistency, but the popular pair were brilliant despite Sydney going down to the Bombers. Sydney had five tons to Essendon’s two (Shiel and Zaharakis), while rookie James Rowbottom will be a late-season cash cow after backing up his 70 from Round 15 with 99.

Villains: Look away if you traded in Zac Clarke as cover for Max Gawn. His second half was much better than his first, but he still battled to 38 and is no guarantee to stay in the Essendon team. So much for those plans for a quick cash grab! Dylan Clarke (55) and Zach Merrett (59) also disappointed.

GOLD COAST SUNS v RICHMOND

Heroes: Jason Castagna is only in 580 SuperCoach teams and there’s a fair chance most of those who selected by autofill. The small forward cashed in against the Suns with 143 points and was joined by teammates Trent Cotchin (126), Kane Lambert (126), Dion Prestia (125), Shai Bolton (122) and Sydney Stack (106) in triple figures. Co-captains David Swallow (118) and Jarrod Witts (100) reached the ton for Gold Coast.

Villains: Even the Tigers rookies performed their roles as Mabior Chol (62) and debutant Derek Eggmolesse-Smith (77) scored well. But nine Gold Coast players scored under 50 and if you had to field Josh Corbett (25) due to Travis Boak’s late withdrawal you’d be in a world of pain.

ADELAIDE CROWS v PORT ADELAIDE

Heroes: Welcome back Hoff. Coming off 37 disposals and three goals in the SANFL, Justin Westhoff returned to senior action with 125 points. Those with the E on him due to Max Gawn’s probable absence would have had a nervous wait on Saturday night to see if they would get Westhoff’s ton or not. Scott Lycett (109) would have been a handy replacement for Gawn as well, while Showdown medallist Robbie Gray managed 110.

Villains: Harsh on Travis Boak, but the back spasms he suffered in the warm up left plenty of coaches scrambling for cover. Hopefully you had Mabior Chol or another rookie to cover on your forward bench, otherwise you could be facing two donuts if Max Gawn also misses.

WESTERN BULLDOGS v GEELONG

Heroes: Marcus Bontempelli was pointless after 15 minutes of the first quarter yet matched Patrick Dangerfield with a game-high 146 as the Dogs shocked ladder leader Geelong. Lachie Hunter (132) and (116) were prolific, while Josh Dunkley (103) and Tom Stewart (103) provided another hundred for their owners. Is Toby McLean (101) worth a look at a bargain price after his re-call? We probably want to see another big score first.

Villains: If you’re still carrying Tom Atkins (44) or Gryan Miers (19), then it’s time to move them on before they lose a decent chunk of their profits. Tom Hawkins’ poor run continued with 52 points, while the ever-consistent Mitch Duncan could only manage 58. It hurts more when a POD premium flops and that was the case on Saturday night.

FREMANTLE v WEST COAST EAGLES

Heroes: The derby was a game with few SuperCoach standouts, unless you happen to have Brad Sheppard or Chris Masten in your team. The Eagles teammates scored 131 and 120 respectively, the biggest numbers on a night where most players finished between 60-100.

Villains: Only 76 for Nat Fyfe as he was well held by his derby nemesis Elliot Yeo. Yeo matched that exact score but could hardly be blamed when he was given a job of negating the Dockers skipper. Griffin Logue was a popular D6 but only scored 50, while Luke Ryan’s 67 would have hurt those who chose him three weeks ago over James Sicily after the Hawk went big against Collingwood.

CARLTON v MELBOURNE

Late change: Max Gawn (ankle) out, replaced in the selected side by Braydon Preuss.

Heroes: Braydon Preuss (140) did his best Max Gawn impersonation, Clayton Oliver (158) had a mountain of it and Tom McDonald churned out 139 for his five goals in just three quarters of footy. Preuss’ opponent Matthew Kreuzer actually went two better with 142, Ed Curnow continued his run of form with 111 and Jack Silvagni (109) has been reborn under David Teague. Plenty of owners will be pleased with Nic Newman’s 107.

Villains: Many of the more than 100,000 SuperCoaches who owned Max Gawn will have copped a donut from his late withdrawal, Marty Hore has well and truly overstayed his welcome, producing just 3 points before he was injured and ruled out for the game. Mitch McGover had a genuine stinker with 22, Cheapie Michael Gibbons managed only 47 and Kade Simpson’s (70) days as a SuperCoach force might be over.

NORTH MELBOURNE v ST KILDA

No late changes:

Heroes: Many SuperCoaches weren’t prepared to shell out for the ‘big two’ at the start of the season and instead opted to go with Todd Goldstein. Those who have stuck with the Roos big man were rewarded on Sunday (148). ‘Goldy’ helped set up the win with a huge first term, while Jack Ziebell (126) was also superb. Jack Billings (144) continued his stellar season for the Saints, while Rowan Marshall (126) - opposed to Goldstein - also had a big day.

Villains: Ben Cunnington (89) coaches would have liked a bigger output from the contested-ball king. Jade Gresham (63) was also kept on a tight leash by North Melbourne.

GWS GIANTS v BRISBANE LIONS

Heroes: There were some biggies in this one. Stephen Coniglio (158) and Lachie Neale (151) went large, while Dawnson Simpson, Harry Himmelberg, Zac Williams and Lincoln McCarthy all posted healthy tons. Noah Answerth rewarded those who held him with an 80 and could now eclipse $300k and be a healthy upgrade domino.

Villains: Popular cheapie Jackson Hately only managed 40 and will be skating on thin ice, while Tim Taranto only scored 76 and
