UPDATE: COLLINGWOOD hopes Jamie Elliott will resume training in two months after booking him in for ankle surgery.
Hours after the club insisted the star forward didn’t suffer a training mishap earlier today, the Magpies revealed Elliott won’t train until late January after reporting “continual soreness” in his left ankle.
Head of football Geoff Walsh said Elliott wasn’t officially due to start his pre-season until next week, but wanted to check on the state of his ankle.

What the club said was a precautionary X-ray to check on the state of the syndesmosis injury he suffered earlier this year confirmed the need for an operation.
“The injury was one Jamie played with late this year,” Walsh said.
“The recommendation post-season was that with a spell from the rigours of playing and training the ankle would heal. Unfortunately, the healing process has been slower than expected and surgery is now appropriate.
“We’re expecting to have Jamie back into the full training program by late January.”
The 25-year-old overcame a serious back injury to play 17 games this year, winning the club’s goalkicking award with 34 goals. But he had some issues with his ankle throughout the year.
Elliott was arrested and fined for urinating in a rubbish bin in Victoria St, North Melbourne, around 4.45am after Derby Day.
Collingwood’s club doctor Chris Bradshaw was stood down two weeks ago after being stripped of his medical licence.
DOCHERTY OUT FOR BLUES WITH ACL
Carlton has been dealt a horror blow, with Sam Docherty tearing his ACL.
Docherty injured his left knee in a seemingly innocuous incident when running at training on Wednesday morning.
“As we commence our pre-season campaign, the news of Sam’s injury is incredibly disappointing for everyone but foremost for Sam,” McKay said yesterday.
“Sam is a total professional and a resilient young man and we know he will face his rehabilitation process with the utmost dedication.”
The rebounding defender won Carlton’s best-and-fairest in 2016 and was selected in this year’s All-Australian team.
FOOTY SURGERY FOR GREENWOOD
ADELAIDE’S pre-season opened on November 20 with a setback to upgraded rookie midfielder Hugh Greenwood. He has had surgery to correct a foot injury.
As the Crows opened their summer training, Greenwood was resting in hospital after surgery to correct Achilles soreness.
The basketball convert — who carried injury through the finals series in September — has an uncertain program this summer with the Crows to re-evaluate his progress in recovery after Christmas.
Crows fitness coach Matt Hass explained: “Hugh was experiencing some soreness around his Achilles towards the back end of last season and it hadn’t improved over the holiday period.
“After further investigation, there was some irritation in an area adjacent to his Achilles and it was decided surgery was the best option for him. He will recover from the surgery over the next few weeks and build up to full training in the new year.”
