ST KILDA coach Alan Richardson says he might have to ignore fitness concerns to spend more time working on his team’s terrible skills. The Saints kicked 7.12 against Hawthorn including the ‘miss of the century’. Recap all Saturday’s AFL action here.
IT’S back to school for the Saints with coach Alan Richardson saying his men lacked the skills to match Hawthorn when the Hawks went to another level in Launceston.
The game was tight all night until Hawthorn broke free to steam home with six goals in the final term to the Saints’ two, both in time-on, for a 35-point win. RECAP ALL SATURDAY’S AFL ACTION IN THE BLOG BELOW “We have to work much harder in that space. “It’s always a challenge, that balance at training of making sure you get enough skill work in - and clearly that’s an issue for us - while making sure the bodies are healthy enough on Saturday. “It might be that we have to take a risk in that space.” The Saints’ inaccuracy was again costly. “Some of our errors coming out of defence, that you wouldn’t expect at this level, are sub-par in that area, and some of our entries at times … you wouldn’t want to be a forward in front of the ball,” Richardson said. “I’ve seen this group execute much better than this. We have to keep working at it.” Alastair Clarkson said his Hawks were about more than just Tom Mitchell. “It’s important that he gets his hands on the footy but Tom getting 45 is not always the best thing for us,” Clarkson said. “We loved his intent and his capacity to get his hands on the footy. “But he had a couple of helpers in Isaac Smith and Ricky Henderson on the wings, they were strong ball winners for us and Jaeger (O’Meara) and Will Langford at different stages and Daniel Howe, they all went through the middle of the ground and that was valuable. “It was a tough night for anyone to get their hands on the footy and use it well. It was a grind and we are just happy we won the grind.” LIVE stream every match of every round of the 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership Season on FOX SPORTS.
