Hamling remains in doubt to for Saturday’s AFL clash in Canberra after taking a head knock during the Dockers’ last-up loss to the West Coast Eagles.
That leaves Fremantle short on key defensive options against a firing Giants forward-line led by Cameron who is leading the Coleman Medal race with 17 goals from three matches.
While Fremantle coach Ross Lyon confirmed that captain Nat Fyfe will return from his own battle with concussion to play the Giants, he remains unsure on the status of Hamling.
“Full-backs are hard to find and he’s (Hamling) in good form and is one of our leaders, and is leading strongly so we’d love for him to be available,” Lyon told media on Wednesday.
“But no risk will be taken.
"He is really important and we are defending quite well and he is a key pillar down there for us.”
Lyon did consider throwing Hogan back on Saturday night against the Eagles, but resisted.
Jesse Hogan could be thrown into defence for Fremantle this weekend.
Jesse Hogan could be thrown into defence for Fremantle this weekend.

However, with more time to plan for it, he is comfortable with the possibility of it happening on Saturday in Canberra if Hamling doesn’t play.
“He has played centre half-back and was a dominant centre half-back coming through at times,” Lyon said of Hamling.
“When you’ve got real extreme football intelligence and capabilities, good players play anywhere and make a fist of it without being specialised.
Matthew Pavlich was a great example.
“On the run last week we discussed Jesse going back but we stuck with the undermanned piece because our pressure was good, but he was the one we would have rolled back. It’s a serious consideration.”
No matter the match ups, Lyon is confident the Dockers will be up for the challenge against a Giants team coming off an upset win in Geelong.
“Obviously Cameron’s in superlative form and (Jeremy) Finlayson’s down there and they have a few,” Lyon said.
“They’ve structured up and they have Toby Greene so they’ve got great capacity and we know that."Our effort has been very strong and our contest has been very strong, creating good opportunities where we’d like to be taking them more.”

More players join Lions AFLW exodus

More players have left Brisbane as the AFLW exodus continues.

Kate McCarthy and Nat Exon are the latest players to sign elsewhere, joining St Kilda, leaving the Lions as the most-affected club by trade and expansion so far this trade period.

The news comes just a day after key forward Sabrina Frederick was traded to Richmond.

McCarthy, who was All-Australian in the competition's first season, will be "incredibly important" to the Saints' forwardline, coach Peta Searle said.

“We believe we have some really good talls coming through our VFLW side, but her speed in front of the ball is phenomenal," she said.

Searle was today confirmed as the leader of the Saints inaugural AFL Women's outfit.

Exon, 26, has played 23 games across three seasons for Brisbane.

“She’s proven over three years that she can find the ball, kick goals, explode and light up the big stage,” Searle said.

“Nat also has some great x-factor and is extremely clever and clean."

The Lions have been given three first-round picks in this year's draft as compensation for losing Frederick, McCarthy and McKenzie Dowrick (West Coast).

Brisbane chief executive Greg Swann questioned the system just days ago, labelling the process "ridiculous".

"I rang someone this morning about the women’s comp. There’s a couple of things happening there I’m not too happy about,” he said on SEN on Saturday.

“We’re losing a heap (of players) and it wasn’t supposed to happen this way.

“It looks like we’re going to lose about a dozen which is ridiculous. We’re working with them trying to fix that.

“We’ve got the Suns coming in up the road and we have to give them eight, that’s part of the rules, but we look like we’ve lost another four back to Melbourne. I’m not sure that was supposed to happen.”

Best and fairest winner Ally Anderson was one of four Lions to re-sign today.

Roos greats inspired breakthrough win

North Melbourne turned to itself for inspiration to spur its first win of the season, new Roo Jasper Pittard has revealed.

The former Power defender said the lead-up to the win over Adelaide included a screen session of great Kangaroos moments of recent years.

The 0-3 start to the season didn’t result in anything “untoward” in the way of soul-searching, Pittard said, but the team was reminded “what as a club what our identity is and what it has been for a long time”.

“Last week (against Hawthorn in Round 3), although we did play some good footy, there were patches where as a team we couldn’t say that we were bodylining the ball all the time, and just doing the really tough one-percenter things that North Melbourne players have done for a number of years,” he said.

DEES TO WELCOME BACK VETERAN STARS

Michael Randall

Melbourne is set to add some steel to its defence, with Jordan Lewis and Neville Jetta cleared to play against St Kilda.

The availability of the influential AFL defenders continues the brightening outlook for the Demons, who looked terribly out of sorts in three losses to start the season but took a step in the right direction with a breakthrough win over Sydney last week.

Lewis is poised to play his first game of the season against the Saints at the MCG on Saturday after overcoming a hamstring injury suffered just days before round one.

Jetta was a late withdrawal from the team that defeated the Swans at the SCG with knee soreness, but coach Simon Goodwin told reporters on Wednesday that both have proved their fitness.

At their worst, the Demons have looked disorganised in the back half and been easy to score against in a shaky start to the season, but Lewis’s return will help stabilise a young back six.

“We saw in the first three weeks that we missed his leadership,” Goodwin said. “He understands the game so well. He’s got that voice and communication behind the ball.

“I thought our back six started to get back to the way they know they can last week even with some inexperience back there, but it’s going to be great to have Jordy available.

”… He had a really solid pre-season and he was ready to go then was a late withdrawal into round one.

“But he’s done a really strong rehab and got some good loads back in.” Small forward Jay Lockhart (back) is also available after he was a late withdrawal against Sydney.

Goodwin is keen to continue his experiment with two ruckmen but Braydon Preuss must shake off a sore shoulder suffered in his first AFL game for the club, to be able to team up with Max Gawn again.

“He was a good inclusion for us, he performed really strongly,” the coach said of Preuss.

“So he’s someone who’s got to get through training but we’re pretty confident he will.

“It worked well for us so we’ll keep having a look at it.”

SEARLE TO CONTINUE AS SAINTS COACH IN AFLW

Michael Randall

St Kilda have appointed current VFLW mentor Peta Searle as its inaugural AFLW coach.

The lifelong Saints fan's appointment ensures the league will have at least one female coach next season.

The Saints on Wednesday confirmed Searle would take the reins when they join the competition next year along with Richmond, West Coast and Gold Coast.

There were no female head coaches in the AFLW this season but speculation is rife that former Adelaide premiership coach Bec Goddard could take over at Collingwood.

Since joining St Kilda, Searle has held several development coaching roles. Searle said she was up for the challenge in the Saints' first foray into the AFL.

“It’s a really important job, but it’s really exciting to bring good footballers and good people into the club and give them the opportunity to wear the red, black and white and develop the foundations of a really sustainable future,” she said.

WALSH DEAL A WARM HUG FOR BATTERED BLUES FANS

Michael Gibbons perhaps best summed up Sam Walsh in the pre-season.

“We’re happy he’s on our team, he’s a superstar. A superstar,” Gibbons said in February.

Today it was confirmed that Walsh would be on that team for a little while longer, having signed a new contract extension

Former Saint opens up on horror injury

Nick O’Kearney can still remember the gut-wrenching feeling of uncertainty.

It was August last year, and while EDFL pundits were digesting the news that one of the competition’s best players had suffered a season-ending injury, the former St Kilda rookie had much more serious issues to ponder.

O’Kearney had sustained a broken neck while playing for Keilor against Glenroy and, as doctors checked on him at frequent intervals to determine any potential problems related to the blow, anything other than his health seemed of little significance.

O'Kearney made his comeback in the opening round of this year's Premier Division season – against Glenroy – and was best afield, icing his performance with four goals.

He's only played four AFL games but Sam Walsh has already earned rave reviews and now he's been re-signed by Carlton.

The No.1 draft pick will be at the Blues until at least 2022 after signing a two-year contract extension today.

Walsh has averaged 26 disposals and 96.5 SuperCoach points over the first four rounds, earning a Rising Star nomination for his 28-disposal game against Gold Coast.

“The club has welcomed me with open arms from the moment I got drafted,” Walsh told the club website.

“The coaches, staff and entire club provide us with everything we need to get the very best out of ourselves, which I have loved. It just motivates you to get better every day.

“What struck me straight away was the elite standards our Club has in place, driven by ‘Crippa’ and ‘Doc’. That has us focused as a young group to fast-track our development and achieve success together.”

Sam Walsh signs new Carlton contract

As Carlton tries to figure out how to use Jack Silvagni, a creative and explosive small forward is the glaring need on the club's list.

The club’s key-position stocks have been shored up forward and back (Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay, Mitch McGovern) and the midfield has star power (Patrick Cripps, Sam Walsh).

Alex Fasolo’s recruitment has not worked out yet — he suffered a back spasm in the VFL last week — while endurance beast Michael Gibbons is yet to kick a goal.

Here are eight out-of-contract goalkickers the Blues could target at the end of the season.

BEN CROCKER (COLLINGWOOD)

Out of contract this year and in solid VFL form after 23 games in three years. A hard-leading, strong-marking 188cm forward who might struggle for opportunities in a stacked Collingwood forward line.

JACK MARTIN (GOLD COAST)

Everyone will be into Jack Martin who is the perfect prototype as a mid-forward who can tackle hard, kick goals and win 20-plus possessions. Has kicked double-figure goals in every season, including 24 in 2017 but would cost a bomb given rival interest.

ALEX NEAL-BULLEN (MELBOURNE)

Kicked 27 goals in 25 games last year as the hardest runner at Melbourne and won 422 possessions — although the Demons did boast huge inside-50 numbers.

SHAI BOLTON (RICHMOND)

Only signed a one-year deal at the Tigers and showed his worth last week with a clever goal and 11 disposals among five tackles. Can he keep his spot all year or will he want more chances elsewhere after rebuffing some Adelaide interest last year.

ANTHONY MCDONALD-TIPUNGWUTI (ESSENDON)

Fresh from seven dynamic goals against Brisbane and coming off a three-year contract. Makes things happen as a fall-of-the-ball forward but after being unearthed by the Dons through their VFL system via the NT surely will show loyalty to the Bombers.

JAMIE ELLIOTT (COLLINGWOOD)

Exactly the kind of forward they need, a hit-up forward who can find space inside 50 and be the hard-leading conduit to push up to the wings.

LEWIS TAYLOR (BRISBANE)

Averaged 17 possessions and a goal a game (plus nearly one score assists) as a lively half forward in 22 games last year but hasn’t cracked a game so far. Dominant in the NEAFL last week with 137 ranking points, 29 possessions, five tackles, five clearances and a goal.

A STATE LEAGUE OPTION FOR MID-SEASON DRAFT

SAM LOWSON (COBURG)

Played 18 games last year, with the 23-year-old averaging three goals, 97 ranking points and 13.5 possessions (9.5 contested) for Coburg in two games so far this year.
