Respected AFL commentator Basil Zempilas sounds warning about Jesse Hogan

A prominent Perth journalist says Fremantle was aware of star recruit Jesse Hogan's off-field issues before they decided to trade for him while the forward’s behaviour has also drawn comparisons to troubled star Ben Cousins.

Fremantle was aware of star recruit Jesse Hogan's off-field issues before they decided to trade for the key forward last year, according to a prominent Perth journalist.

And images circulating of Hogan should be a further warning for the club, with Basil Zempilas likening pictures of a seemingly under-the-weather Hogan to troubled AFL legend Ben Cousins.

On Tuesday night the Dockers announced Hogan would miss this weekend's Round 1 clash after he "made poor choices around alcohol consumption" on Saturday night, the club also saying the goalkicker was dealing with clinical anxiety.

Speaking on morning radio in Perth, Kim Hagdorn said the club was aware of Hogan's struggles before handing over picks 6 and 23 for the former Demon.

Hagdorn also said he believed Hogan was involved in an incident at a Perth venue at the weekend and might have sustained injuries from the alleged altercation.

"Now Fremantle continue to say they've done their due diligence and that this man was going to take them back into finals contention," Hagdorn said on 6PR Breakfast.

"I continue to find it alarming that they've dismissed it so simply, that is just anxiety.

"Clearly, there has not been a significant network of support put around this man."

Hagdorn said he expected there to be further fallout from Hogan’s weekend antics.

"The allegation and the suspicion now is that Jesse Hogan has rib injuries out of the altercation," he said.

"Fremantle's leadership group was summoned yesterday afternoon to assist on decisions for Hogan's sanctions and there were more urgent meetings last night of Fremantle's senior management … they are chasing diligently, feverishly vision of what took place in the car park at the Cut Tavern on Saturday evening.

"It is a growing story and sadly it will affect Fremantle's chances in the early games of the season and certainly their boom recruit."

Zempilas, one of the voices of Channel 7's AFL commentary team, said the vision of Hogan wasn't pretty.

"One thing Fremantle can't hide from, the number of images that have gone around of Jesse Hogan in an inebriated state … to be honest we haven't seen pictures of one particular AFL player like that since Ben Cousins was at the height of his problems.

"The Dockers said in a statement last night that the club would continue to support Hogan.

“Jesse continues to train very hard on the training track and he will continue to train with the team, but his clinical anxiety can lead to him making poor decisions around alcohol consumption and, therefore, impact his health and wellbeing.”

WARNINGS ON HOGAN?

"There's been warnings all summer on Jesse Hogan's weekend, nocturnal behaviours and most media in this town know about it," Hagdorn said.

"There was an official Fremantle function for sponsors at Crown late last December. Jesse Hogan was in such an inebriated state that chief executive Steve Rosich, (football manager) Peter Bell and two board members met in a corner for some 20 minutes at this function to decide on action. "

A senior Fremantle player was asked to take Jesse home.

FREO’S DECISION TO TRADE FOR HOGAN

"Back in October, at lunchtime on Friday October 12, Fremantle pulled out of the pursuit for Jesse Hogan," Hagdorn said.

"They pulled out of it after the due diligence had been so thorough that serious alarm bells were ringing through the Fremantle recruiting and football management team, that they should back off and not bring Jesse Hogan in – he had too many problems"(CEO) Steve Rosich overruled that decision, Friday into Saturday, and they went back into the chase some 20 hours later for Jesse Hogan … They've known about this from the moment they took him in."

That’s all for today’s AFL Daily. Thanks for joining us. We will be back nice and early tomorrow.

‘I love Thor’: Wallis

CHRIS CAVANAGH

Western Bulldogs onballer Mitch Wallis says he can’t wait to pull on the club’s Thor-themed jumper for its Round 1 clash with Sydney this weekend.

Wallis – who declared himself a big fan of Marvel and the brand’s Thor character – said he could not understand what all the fuss was about over the one-off jumper change.

AFL rules allow clubs to wear one special themed jumper each year.

“I love Thor. I’m definitely a Marvel fan so we jumped at the opportunity to wear it,” Wallis told the Herald Sun.

“Obviously there’s been a lot of criticism and backlash about it but there’s a connection with (actor) Chris Hemsworth and the Bulldogs and being the first game at Marvel Stadium, I thought it was a great opportunity to showcase Marvel but also the Western Bulldogs.”

The Bulldogs meet Sydney at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.

Fit O’Meara ready to fire for Hawks

Liam Twomey

Hawthorn star Jaeger O’Meara is poised to take his game to a new level after completing a pre-season free of the nagging knee soreness that has hampered him in the past.

After managing just six matches in three years, O’Meara played 21 games last year and, in a change from previous limited preparations, was then able to participate in most of the summer training program.

“It’s been a bit of a natural progression … I think just building those blocks has allowed me to have a pretty good pre-season and hopefully I can play in all the games," O’Meara said.

Gaz to be ‘a role player’ for Cats: Scott

GLENN McFARLANE

Geelong coach Chris Scott has tempered expectations on Gary Ablett’s much-heralded move to attack this year, saying he expects the dual Brownlow Medallist to be “a role player” for the Cats in 2019 who won’t play every game.

Ablett, who turns 35 in May, is about to enter the final year of his current deal with the Cats, with Scott saying he can still be an important contributor for the club.

But as the Cats prepare to take on Collingwood in Friday night’s Round 1 clash, Scott said Ablett won’t be expected to carry the load as he has in the past.

Goodwin signs new deal

Liam Twomey

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has put pen to paper on a contract extension which will keep him at the club until 2022.
“It’s great for the club to announce, prior to the season starting, that Simon Goodwin has signed on for the next four years,” he CEO Gary Pert said.

“It is certainly a show of confidence from the Board, Josh Mahoney and myself in Simon as a coach and what he is producing out on field, but also the culture that he is building in our football department.

“This is the Board signing off that these are the people, this is the leadership, this is the program and this is the culture that we believe will take the Melbourne Football Club to where we want to go over the next four years. It’s an investment in those people and the program, so that makes it pretty exciting.”

AFL's embarrassing Pendles fail

Ben Broad

Uh oh, say it ain't so, Pendles.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury today posted a picture to his Instagram (story) account, showing a framed certificate for him being awarded AFL life membership.

The only problem? His name is spelt incorrectly!

Pendlebury has played 277 AFL matches. Players are eligible for life membership to the League after compiling a total 300 matches – consisting representative football and pre-season matches.

McWilliams out for Cats

Liam Twomey

Geelong's preliminary final hopes have been dealt a significant blow with star forward Phoebe McWilliams to have surgery tomorrow.

McWilliams has broken her left hand and will not play against Adelaide on Sunday.

She suffered the injury in a marking contest in the Cats' huge loss to Greater Western Sydney in Canberra on Friday night.
