Carlton has released former No.4 draft pick Jarrod Pickett.

The Blues this afternoon released a statement suggesting Pickett had lost the motivation to play.

Pickett, 22, has endured an injury-interrupted career at Carlton with the small forward still recovering from a ruptured patella tendon he suffered in a training mishap last December.

He also missed the first half of the 2018 season with a fractured wrist.

Before the knee injury, Pickett was ordered to complete extra training sessions with the Blues’ VFL team after returning to pre-season overweight.

Pickett will return home to Western Australia.

“Pickett and the club have been in ongoing discussions regarding his motivation to continue playing at the high level, with a decision made it would be in the best interests of the club and Pickett to part ways,” the statement said.

“The Blues will continue to support the 22-year-old as he transitions back home to Western Australia to be closer to family, with the club to continue to provide rehabilitation on his injured knee.”

Adelaide coach Don Pyke says it would be foolish to write Richmond off as a spent AFL force.

The Crows host Richmond on Thursday night with the Tigers beset by injury problems and on a two-game losing streak.

Adelaide has just two players on its injured list – Tom Lynch is sidelined by a calf strain and defender Tom Doedee won’t play again this season after having a knee reconstruction.

In stark contrast, the Tigers travel to Adelaide with 15 players on their injured list.

But Pyke says he’d be foolish not to be wary of Richmond, noting his fifth- placed side and seventh-placed Tigers have both banked seven wins this season.

“They’re a dangerous team and we know what they’re capable of,” Pyke told reporters on Tuesday.

“And they sit level with us on the ladder for a reason.

“They had a good win over here earlier in the year against Port so I’m sure they’re going to be coming over keen to atone for a couple of poor performances.

“And for us, we have won a couple (in a row). But there’s no guarantee.

“We have got to start at zero (points) again on Thursday night and earn our stripes.”

Experienced Gold Coast midfielder Jordan Murdoch is facing a long stint on the sidelines after damaging ankle ligaments in last Saturday’s loss to North Melbourne.

The 27-year-old limped off in the third quarter of the Suns’ 27-point loss to the Kangaroos at Metricon Stadium, after being caught underneath a tackle by North youngster Tarryn Thomas.

Scans have revealed Murdoch has ligament damage and the club is giving the injury time to settle before determining a likely return date.

Richmond star Dustin Martin is expected play in their clash with Adelaide as the Tigers try to put their spluttering season back on track.

Coach Damien Hardwick is confident the Tigers will fix their problems, especially around contested ball, but said it will take time.

Richmond could also regain Nick Vlastuin and Brandon Ellis from injury for the Thursday night match at Adelaide Oval, but David Astbury will miss another week.

Martin suffered a knock in Friday night’s 67-point loss to Geelong.

“Our indications are that he will play, no problems,” Hardwick said.

Top side Geelong took Richmond apart, a week after North Melbourne upset the Tigers.

“We have a style … that we want to play,” Hardwick said.

“To be beaten in contested (ball) again was disappointing.

“We are working on some things, we understand what the problem is, we just have to continue work through that part of our game.

“It does take a little bit of lag to catch up.”

Only five Richmond players are yet to miss a game this season and Hardwick said continuity was another problem.

“We’re confident our players and our system will stand up,” Hardwick said.

“We’ll continue to improve, we’ll continue to train it and it’s great test this week … v Adelaide.

“It’s a really good opportunity to stand up and show what makes us, us.”

MRO findings

West Coast pair Willie Rioli and Nathan Vardy have both accepted one-match bans from the match review officer.

Rioli was suspended for laying a dangerous tackle on Sydney’s Colin O’Riordan, which concussed the Swan and ruled him out for the rest of the match.

Vardy was charged with rough conduct against Jackson Thurlow, who missed the second half of Sydney’s win over the Eagles.

In other MRO findings, Gold Coast pair Wil Powell and Jack Martin and North Melbourne’s Cameron Zurhaar have accepted $1000 fines for their involvement in a melee, and Adelaide’s Paul Seedsman was fined $1000 for kneeing GWS backman Nick Haynes.

Martin, meanwhile, had a match day report for bumping Jack Ziebell thrown out.

Injury-plagued Essendon forward Orazio Fantasia could join Dylan Shiel and Jake Stringer as big recalls for their clash with Hawthorn.

Coach John Worsfold said on Tuesday that Fantasia is yet to prove his fitness but is on track for Friday night’s match at Marvel Stadium.

Shiel and Stringer will return from hamstring injuries.

“He trained on the weekend and if he ticks all the other boxes that he has to tick, he’ll be ready to go,” Worsfold said of Fantasia.

“Some of the younger players are performing really well.

“Ultimately if they aren’t performing at the level that will hold those more experienced or senior players out, then they do make way until their performance says they’re in front of those guys.”

Worsfold acknowledged midfielder Dylan Clarke was at risk of losing his spot, despite performing an excellent shutdown role on Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps in just his second game.
