Will Crows fit Jenkins back in?

Chris Vernuccio

Adelaide expect forward Tom Lynch and utility David Mackay to return to AFL ranks for Saturday night’s game against Melbourne.

But key onballer Matt Crouch (hip/abdominal injury) remains in doubt for the trip to Darwin to play the Demons.

Lynch (hamstring) and Mackay (illness) were late withdrawals from Adelaide’s loss to West Coast last Saturday.

Crouch, who has missed the past two games, will undergo a fitness test at training on Thursday.

“He has regained his running capabilities … it’s more the ballistic, dynamic movements that are the concerns,” Adelaide’s high performance manager Matt Hass said in a statement.

Whether experienced duo Bryce Gibbs and Josh Jenkins return to AFL action after being dropped for poor form remains unknown.

Gibbs was dropped for last week’s game – the second time he has been dumped this season – while Jenkins has been overlooked since being omitted after round four.

But winger Paul Seedsman is praising the spirit of the two stalwarts during their AFL absences.

“Their attitude and the way they have handled themselves around the club has been nothing but first-class,” Seedsman told reporter.

“Obviously they’re not playing where they want to be at the moment but I have got full confidence that both blokes will get back there.

“Whether that is this week or not, I’m not sure.”

First-choice ruckman Sam Jacobs, who has been sidelined since Round 2 because of a knee injury, was tipped to return this weekend but most likely in state league ranks.

TWO of the game's greatest forwards have lashed Carlton recruit Mitch McGovern, questioning his desire and suggesting he may need to return to the VFL to find form.

McGovern went scoreless in Sunday's loss to St Kilda as he had just five disposals from three marks.

He left the field in the final term after rolling an ankle before returning late to have little influence.

North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey said after seeing McGovern struggle on the weekend, he needed to be dropped.

"I don't like to be critical of players, I like to try to be constructive (but) there's not a way I can be constructive about Mitch McGovern," Carey said on Channel Seven.

"He just did not have a go, he did not want to go near the ball, he did not want to be that player down the line.

"He's the six-foot-four guy that they needed to work harder.

"At times, he was running away from the footy, and then in the end it was a blessing for the Blues when he went off."

Fellow former champion forward Jonathan Brown also had McGovern in his sights.

“This bloke is unreliable late in games,” Brown said on Fox Footy.

“Look at the amount of times this year he’s left the ground to get an injury checked when Carlton was well and truly in the game. He’s unreliable.

“We see him as a marking forward – well, you’d want to, he’s getting paid north of $700,000 a year. You’d want to be marking the footy.

“Last six weeks: four marks, four marks, four marks, three marks, eight marks and three marks.”

Why Tim Kelly can win the Brownlow

Chris Vernuccio

In Patrick Dangerfield's absence, Tim Kelly stepped up to ensure Geelong left the Gold Coast with the the four points.

Kelly produced another dominant display to accumulate 35 disposals and eight clearances, which will likely deliver him another three Brownlow Medal votes.

He is now on the fourth line of betting for the Brownlow at $7 and Jon Anderson wouldn't be surprised if the second-year Cat, who now leads the coaches' award (see below), can secure Charlie.

“His legend continue to grow each week," Anderson said.

“He’s a rare player. Just the way he covers the ground, he doesn’t seem to be running that quickly.

“He’s a one-touch handler, there’s never any fumbling. His story is obviously going to be massive towards the end of the year when we see whether West Coast or Fremantle lure him back.

“I know Geelong are confident they can retaining him, it’s just a matter of Tim’s partner being happy in Geelong.”

Surgery for Lions midfielder

Chris Vernuccio

Promising Brisbane midfielder Jarrod Berry is expected to be out of AFL action for six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a Baker’s cyst from his knee.

A Baker’s cyst is a fluid-filled pocket that causes a blister-like bulge and can cause pain behind the knee.

Lions football manager David Noble said 21-year-old Berry’s knee was sore after the team’s Round 9 win against Adelaide.

“After discussions with our medical team and Jarrod, surgery was agreed upon as the best solution going forward,” Noble said.

“With Jarrod having a previous Baker’s cyst, we have some previous information on how his body reacts to these and used that information to help us make an informed decision.

“We anticipate that his return would be around six weeks but will have a clearer picture once he has his surgery.”

Hirst snapped up by Swans

It took until the last pick but Eastern Ranges small forward Cody Hirst is on an AFL list.

Sydney last night snapped up the lightly built 19-year-old with the final selection in the mid-season draft.

Hirst had an inkling the Swans were keen but thought he would be overlooked after they used their first pick on South Adelaide ruckman Michael Knoll.

“I knew Sydney had interest but once they took the big fella (Knoll) at pick 4, I kind of didn’t really know what to expect,” Hirst said.

“I thought possibly Adelaide and then they passed and I thought that was it.

“I just thought the teams with two picks were going to pass but once (Sydney recruiting manager) Simon (Dalrymple) walked out, I had a little bit of hope and once he read my name out, it was just a bit overwhelming.”

Is Cat Kelly Brownlow-bound?

Ben Broad

Geelong star Tim Kelly has taken the lead in the AFL coaches' award.

Kelly, the second-year Cat who last year requested a trade back to his native WA, starred in his side's win on the Gold Coast.

He polled nine votes in the win to snatch the lead from Blues co-captain Patrick Cripps, who polled four votes in the loss to St Kilda.

New Roos coach won't alter approach

Tim Michell

Gilbert Gardiner reports…

North Melbourne caretaker coach Rhyce Shaw has promised to be his “quirky” self, having stepped into the top job at Arden Street.

Asked about sharing one of his so-called quirks the widely-respected assistant coach dead-panned: “my brother”.

“He probably sums it all up,” Shaw said, in reference to GWS Giants veteran Heath Shaw.

“I’m a jovial bloke and I like high energy, I like punchiness, and I like the guys to be comfortable expressing themselves as much as they can.

“That’s just me, I want them doing their job but also comfortable expressing what they can.”

Shaw will hold the Kangaroos fort until the end of the season but the Sydney Swans premiership defender and former assistant under John Longmire has not looked beyond facing Richmond on Friday night at the MCG.

Shaw took the Kangaroos away from Arden Street yesterday and “chewed the fat” following Brad Scott’s cordial but abrupt departure.

“It has been an emotional time no doubt about that… these guys have been so close to Scotty for a long period of time,” Shaw said.

“We went out yesterday and got off site, had a kick around and then went out for lunch, just chewed the fat really, made sure everyone was comfortable and was able to talk about what they’re feeling at that point in time, they’ve come in this morning and we had our meeting and the boys seem really good.”

Shaw also said he would take Scott up on his offer for provide any guidance or assistance, as necessary.

Tragic news: Thoughts with Brad Green and family

Ben Broad

The wife of former Melbourne champ Brad Green has passed away suddenly.

The young mum and lifestyle blogger Anna Green leaves behind two sons.

Our thoughts are with the Greens, as well as all family and friends.

The AFL Tribunal will NOT sit tonight after all players accepted sanctions from Round 10.

That means Geelong champ Gary Ablett will miss his side's clash with the Sydney Swans this weekend.

And at the lower level, Dees veteran Jordan Lewis has copped a week, meaning his possible return to the AFL will have to wait at least one more week.
