Bonus premiership point ideal incentive to lift scoring in games, says Geelong’s Josh Jenkins
Every AFL fan loves the scoreboard ticking over when teams are peppering the goals, so it’s little wonder Geelong’s Josh Jenkins is pushing hard a bonus concept to ensure teams strive for bigger scores. But is it wise?

Geelong’s Josh Jenkins has again floated the idea of a bonus point to incentivise scoring in the AFL.
The Crow turned Cat first proposed the idea in a column in 2016. He suggested AFL chief Gillon McLachlan introduce a bonus premiership point for teams that score 100 points or more in a match.
It’s a concept supported by AFL legend Leigh Matthews.

“It doesn’t matter what you do with the rules, coaches determine how the game looks. We’ve got to incentivise the coaches to score more,” he said on 3AW last month.
But Brisbane’s Mitch Robinson said the idea is flawed.
“So, throw all your defensive structure out the window to score an extra point but potentially lose the game? All for a shootout, but if you go down that avenue and come away with 1 point compared to 5 it’d be dumb,” he tweeted to Jenkins.
It comes as Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson apologised for “s---canning” the game after being “so disappointed with the way that the game is being played right at the present time”.
