A MCG official has been counselled after calling out a “drug cheat” sledge targeting retired Essendon champion Jobe Watson during Saturday night’s Dreamtime blockbuster.

The usher apologised after he was tracked down following Herald Sun inquiries on Monday.

Witnesses alleged the comment was made when Richmond superstar Dustin Martin held the ball during the second quarter.

“He called out, ‘At least he’s not going to lose his Brownlow for being a drug cheat’,” Bombers member Jenny Kubainsky said.

“It’s a bit rich sitting in the Essendon members and copping that. Rob (my friend) was irate – really upset.

“(The MCG official) argued why can people get away with booing Dusty. But the issue was he’s working at the MCG and in the Essendon members and throwing ‘drug cheat’ around and about our Jobe.”

An Essendon official selling raffle tickets was called to the incident and witnesses reported the MCG worker’s badge number to the area’s supervisor at half-time.

The MCG official was remorseful.

“An MCG event staff member made an inappropriate comment towards players while working in the seating area on Saturday night,” MCC spokesman Shane Brown said last night.

“Such behaviour is not to the high standard we expect of our people, who do an excellent job each weekend.

“The staff member has apologised for the remark and has been counselled over his behaviour.”
