SIMON Goodwin will have to make tough calls on two former co-captains in his first weeks as new Melbourne coach.

Jack Trengove and Jack Grimes remain out of contract for next season after spending the bulk of the year in the VFL.

While the pair will meet with Goodwin early next week to discuss their futures, Trengove, 24, appears more likely to be retained for next season.

Grimes, 27, is expected to consider his options in October’s exchange period after only two senior games this year.

And Collingwood premiership forward Chris Dawes could be on the move to a third club or forced to consider retirement as the Demons weigh up a contract extension for the key forward.

Dawes, 28, is battling to retain his spot after playing only six games this season.

They are difficult decisions for the Demons as Trengove and Grimes are two of the most popular members of the playing group who shouldered a lot of burden throughout the disastrous 2012-14 seasons.

But midfield spots will be tightly contested at Melbourne next season as the club looks to integrate banned Bombers pair Jake Melksham and Michael Hibberd into the senior team.

The Demons want to part with pick No. 27 in this year’s trade period for Hibberd.

Melbourne will attempt to secure its first finals berth in 11 years next season after narrowly missing a spot this year after last weekend’s loss to Carlton.

The club was mindful not to put unnecessary pressure on Trengove this season as he made his comeback from two years out of the game with a nightmare foot injury.

He averaged 25 possessions and eight tackles in the VFL this season.

It is unclear if there are any suitors for Grimes, who averaged 29 possessions and seven tackles for Casey this year.

Dawes is ranked poor as a key forward in the AFL for marks, score involvements and goals by Champion Data this season.

Dawes joined Melbourne on a four year deal worth as much as $2 million at the end of 2012 but is no longer assured a spot in the senior team.
