Melbourne star Clayton Oliver suffered a seizure on Wednesday night which required him to be taken by ambulance to Footscray Hospital emergency department.

The Herald Sun understands the Demons midfielder hit his head during what the club described as a “medical episode” but was cleared of any head injuries.

He was discharged early on Thursday morning around four hours after being seen by doctors following a number of medical tests.

Melbourne confirmed on Thursday that the 26-year-old had been cleared to leave and was now recovering at home.

The Demons have vowed to provide Oliver with any treatment he requires, with the club’s doctor Laura Lallenec already working closely with the midfielder’s medical support team.

In a statement, Melbourne said Oliver had been “transferred to hospital via ambulance, following a medical episode.”

“The hospital completed a number of tests and Clayton has since been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home,” the statement said.

“The club will continue to work with Clayton and his medical support team to ensure he receives all the necessary treatment.

“We ask that (the) media respect Clayton’s privacy at this time.”

It comes after a tumultuous week for Oliver after the Demons sought a commitment from the four-time best-and-fairest winner that he would improve his professionalism and his behavioural standards.

It is understood Melbourne had become increasingly concerned about Oliver’s behaviour in recent times, with rival clubs believing the Demons could look to trade him.

But after several days of silence on the matter, club chief executive Gary Pert released a statement to members hours before last Friday night’s best-and-fairest award saying that the midfielder would be staying with the club.

A handful of clubs including Adelaide had been eager to enter trade discussions for Oliver.

Oliver posted a series of pictures from the Demons’ best-and-fairest count last Friday just after 6pm on Wednesday.

Pert’s statement last Friday stressed: “At no stage has the club entered discussions with any club regarding a trade for Clayton,” Pert said in a letter on Melbourne’s website.

“Furthermore, Clayton has not requested a trade and will remain at the Melbourne Football Club.

“The club has been aware of and supporting Clayton with his personal circumstances for some time and is committed to continuing to do so.”

Oliver still has seven years left on a deal that runs through until the end of 2030, on a deal close to $1 million per season.

He is already one of the most decorated Demons in the club’s history, having won four club best and fairest awards (2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022) from his eight AFL seasons.

He managed only 15 games this season - his lowest tally since his 2016 debut season - after a nagging hamstring injury that caused him much frustration.

He was seen on at least one occasion in heated discussions with club medical/conditioning staff as he desperately tried to prove his fitness.

Oliver ended up playing the club’s last five games this season and was one of the team’s best players in two losing finals with 31 and 27 disposals respectively.
