Matthew Nicks could re-sign with Adelaide Crows in coming days
Forget the round 1 date, Adelaide is unlikely to even wait until 2026 to lock Matthew Nicks in at West Lakes with the Crows coach to re-sign as early as next week.
Adelaide may re-sign senior coach Matthew Nicks as soon as this coming week.
The Crows are understood to be in advanced talks with Nicks, whose deal expires after the 2026 season.
A short-term extension is believed to be on the cards for the 50-year-old after guiding Adelaide to its first finals series since 2017.
Crows chief executive Tim Silvers saying earlier this month that the club wants to re-sign Nicks before round 1 drew criticism in some circles.
Critics suggest Adelaide should wait until midway through the campaign to see how the team starts the campaign.
But the Crows are determined to avoid distractions and running commentary on Nicks’s contract so the club can focus on winning each week.
Nicks has coached Adelaide for six seasons, overseeing the start of the team’s rebuild in 2020.
The Crows claimed their first wooden spoon during his maiden campaign (three wins), then placed 15th (seven), 14th (eight), 10th (11) and 15th (eight-and-a-half) over the next four years.
Adelaide collected the minor premiership this past season with an 18-5 record, before losing two consecutive home finals to finish fifth.
Nicks, the second-longest serving Crows coach on 131 games, has a 55-1-75 (42.37 per cent) win-loss record.
He could pass Neil Craig (166 matches from 2004-2011) in 2027.
