FOUR of the game’s biggest names — including two Brownlow medallists — will hand-pick teams at a live draft with the format of the new-look AFLX confirmed.

As revealed by the Herald Sun this week, Adelaide star Eddie Betts will lead the Deadlys, an all-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island side in the dramatically revamped event, which will see four teams face-off in one night of competition on February 22 at Marvel Stadium.

Patrick Dangerfield, Nat Fyfe and Jack Riewoldt will lead the three other outfits, named the Bolts, Flyers and Rampage respectively.

A live draft will be held in early February, with the quartet having a pool of 100 players to select from.

A maximum of four players per AFL club competing in the event, with each team consisting of 14 players, with eight on the field at any one time.

“The Deadlys will be just that, deadly,” Betts said.

“Captaining a team of the best Indigenous men’s talent in the country is such an honour for me, especially when it falls at the end of our AFL Indigenous All Stars Summit giving us the opportunity to play all together.”

Dangerfield said he planned to use his recent International Rules Series experiences as intelligence.

“Being part of previous International Rules Series has given me great insight into other players,” he said.

“I’ll be using that knowledge to build the Bolts list, they’ll be fast, smart and ready to take on the best in the league.”

AFLX is played on a rectangular field with the four teams to compete in a round-robin format that will see the top-two teams play off in a grand final.

“I’m watching pre-season training closely across all clubs,” Riewoldt said.

“I know who I want, and I’ll go pretty hard in selecting them at the draft. The Rampage will be ready come February.”
