The Brisbane Lions are confident they can overcome the loss of in-form forward Joe Daniher, who is facing at least a month on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.
Daniher, who has been among the Lions’ best players this season booting 19 goals, suffered the injury in Brisbane’s impressive 24-point win over the Swans the SCG on Sunday.
The former Essendon star was subbed out of the game and is now facing an anxious wait to discover the severity of the injury.
With Monday being a public holiday in Brisbane, Daniher won’t be able to have scan on the injury until Tuesday.
However, Lions football boss Danny Daly was the said the team was preparing to be without the 28-year-old former All-Australian for a minimum of a month.
“We’re hoping the injury isn’t too serious and he’s only out for four to six weeks, but we won’t know until after he has his scans on Tuesday,” Daly told News Corp Australia.
Daly also told TAB Radio that Daniher had “subluxed” his shoulder, meaning the joint had been partially dislocated.
“They strapped him up and he kept going but he went up for a marking contest and it popped out a little bit again,” Daly said.
“If it had have been a grand final, or a final, they would have jabbed him up and went back out so it was more precautionary.”
Lions coach Chris Fagan said did not to “take any risks” with Daniher.
“Hopefully it’s not too bad – we’ll have to wait and see,” Fagan said.
However, Fagan back the in-form Lions, who have won six from seven this year to only trail the undefeated Melbourne, to cope in Daniher’s absence.
“We had 10 goalkickers (against Sydney) – we regularly have 10 goalkickers,” he said/
“We don’t really rely on any one person to score for us.”
Fagan used the fit-again Cam Rayner as an example of Brisbane’s versatility in attack and the Lions not needing to rely on Daniher for goals.
“Cam Rayner, he was playing on-ball (against the Swans) and we said to him at half-time ‘Joey’s not going to come back on, we need you to play as a tall forward for us’ ... and he finished the night we three goals (and) two (behinds).
“We’re a versatile side. We don’t rely on any one person for scoring and I think that showed out (on Sunday night).”
Also helping the Lions’ cause in Daniher’s absence is that their next four matches are against teams currently in the bottom eight – West Coast, Adelaide, Hawthorn and the GWS Giants.
