HAWTHORN is negotiating with Melbourne over an exchange of late picks that will make midfield star Jordan Lewis a Demon.

But while the Lewis deal looks likely to be done as early as Tuesday, the Hawks are struggling to convince any of their players to join Gold Coast as part of the Jaeger O’Meara deal

It means the Hawks may have to try and satisfy the Suns with another early draft pick to package with the No.10 selection it received from St Kilda.

Hawthorn’s talks with Melbourne will continue this morning as the Hawks attempt to prise pick No.48 from the Demons for Lewis.

It is understood the Hawks would be willing to rubber-stamp the trade in the morning if it can secure the third-round selection.

But Melbourne had instead earmarked pick No.66 for the Hawthorn vice-captain, meaning both clubs may have to compromise with a shuffling of mid-to-late selections to finalise the deal.

On Monday, the Herald Sun revealed Lewis, 30, had submitted an official trade request and was set to sign a three-year deal to join Melbourne.

Lewis has informed Hawthorn teammates his glittering 12-year career at Waverley has come to an end after 264 games and four premierships.

While the talks were unable to reach an agreement, all parties remain confident the trade would be finalised by Thursday’s trade deadline.

Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney was optimistic the Demons would land the All-Australian.

“We will start having conversations again with Hawthorn this week and as we said, we would be interested in getting something done, but there is a fair bit to play out still,” Mahoney said.

“There’s been some conversations over the weekend with Hawthorn and with Jordan … and we will see where that takes us.”

The Hawks have moved on five-time best-and-fairest winner Sam Mitchell to West Coast and will trade Lewis to the Demons to help clear salary cap space for new recruits O’Meara, Tyrone Vickery and Tom Mitchell.

But the trade for O’Meara continues to stall as tensions rise over the gun ballwinner’s future.

The Suns wanted to secure a senior Hawthorn midfielder for O’Meara but the players which have been approached about a trade have knocked back offers to move north.

The Hawks were also unsuccessful in their attempt to gain pick No.21 from Brisbane in exchange for Billy Hartung and Brendan Whitecross.

If the two clubs are unsuccessful in trade talks, O’Meara may be forced into the national draft, potentially leaving Gold Coast red-faced and empty-handed.
