JESSE Hogan says he has been invigorated by a Wayne Carey masterclass, confident he has forever eradicated his “selfish” body language.

The young Melbourne star was best afield in the Demons’ latest win after being hammered by critics for his poor on-field demeanour in Round 2.

Melbourne’s forwards were noted for their selflessness in sharing goals on Saturday, with Hogan saying they will get better the longer they stay together.

He is loving playing in a talented forward line stacked with stars, labelling Christian Petracca “probably the most explosive player I have ever played with.”

Hogan told the Herald Sun the meeting with Carey had been a revelation that had armed him with tools to keep his body language in check.

“I saw ‘Duck’ after Round 2 after my body language issues. I don’t think I was getting ahead of myself but I was playing a bit deeper and wasn’t doing what made me a good footballer,’’ he said.

“I spoke to him and he simplified it for me. I was surprised, he is so in tune with today’s game.

“I knew he was a star but I thought he might be a bit outdated but his footy brain is unbelievable.

“The things he had to say I wrote them down in my phone and I refer to them a lot. They are just simple triggers for me to go back to.”

Hogan says he understands why people were so critical of his on-field emotions.

“You have just got to keep your chin up because you can suck so many people into that. If I have bad body language people around me will see that and it affects them. It was quite a selfish thing, actually.

“It is something I hope I can go past and never go back to with that bad body language.”

Hogan returned to form with 5.1 after a pair of wayward 1.3 hauls in his previous two weeks, aware he needs to nail down a set-shot routine despite an encouraging 23.15 this year.

“Obviously it’s still a bit inconsistent. At training I do exactly the same (routine) every time but when I play it changes. That’s the biggest issue. It’s why I am copping scrutiny and missing some easy ones.”

But as the football world scrutinises his long-term future, he seems to be relishing his role in Melbourne’s forward setup.

And if he has fun in a winning side, why would he want to leave the Demons?

“We are starting to get that chemistry. Everyone gets a lick (of the ice cream). Jeffy (Garlett) probably handed off five or six goals and Harmsey (James Harmes) got on the end of three Joe-the-Gooses in the last quarter and it’s just fun to play,’’ he said.

“The longer we can remain together, the more fun it will be.”

Hogan said on Tuesday his whistlestop tour home to West Australia after the win over Gold Coast was overblown after he was forced to deny he had met Fremantle.

The 21-year-old has put off contract talks until the end of the year, with Petracca on Tuesday confident he would again sign on.

“Simon Goodwin talked about how at Essendon Dyson Heppell would go back to Gippsland as a mental break,’’ Hogan said.

“Last year I was having a game off and they would send me home but I was able to get home and have a few days and then still play rather than having a break.

“It was probably looked into a bit too much, but that’s all it was, a physical and mental release.”
