Geelong is set to welcome back two key players ahead of an important Friday night clash with the Western Bulldogs. Rhys Stanley and small forward Gary Rohan are “likely” inclusions for the Cats, as the side prepares for its final game before the mid-season bye. “Potentially (we get) Rhys Stanley, and I think Gary Rohan will play, I think there’s even more certainty around that,” coach Chris Scott said. “Those two are likely, but really the bulk of those guys that are missing at the moment will be a post-bye proposition. There’s a big cohort of them … we just need to think through exactly how we reintroduce those guys, quite a few of them would be OK to play next week. The quandary for us is with four, five, six guys available, bringing them all back at once does present a challenge for cohesion.” Scott said it was “not a foregone conclusion” that first-gamer Neale would make way at the selection table.

Ned Reeves, the tallest man in the AFL, is looming as a timely inclusion for Sunday’s clash with Collingwood.

First-year Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell has been without a recognised ruckman more often that he would like in 2022, with Max Lynch playing just six games and Reeves and none since he injured his shoulder in round 5.

Mitchell also said gun midfielder Jaeger O’Meara, who missed the trip to Darwin last week, was also a chance to return to play the Magpies.

“We have another two training sessions this week,” Mitchell said.

“If he’s got any sort of signs or worrying we don’t risk him. We think he’ll probably play.”

Tom McDonald – Ankle – Test

Christian Salem – Knee – Test

Demons coach Simon Goodwin has revealed he is weighing up bringing in as many as six new faces for Saturday’s clash with Sydney, locking in defender Adam Tomlinson to replace concussed star Steven May. Tomlinson could get the job on Sydney superstar Lance Franklin if he overcomes a one-match ban at the tribunal, with premiership defenders Christian Salem and Michael Hibberd, as well as Ed Langdon, James Harmes and Tom McDonald, all “available for selection”.

Cam Zurhaar – Foot – 2-3 weeks

An untimely quad injury to Callum Coleman-Jones means North Melbourne coach David Noble will have to look elsewhere to replace star forward Cam Zurhaar (foot). Key defender Ben McKay is set to return from a knee injury for Saturday’s clash against Gold Coast in Darwin. After making the move from Richmond to the Kangaroos in the off-season, Coleman-Jones has played just four senior games, the last in round 9 after which both he and Jaidyn Stephenson were dropped to the second-tier competition. Neither will be back in the senior team this week, with a quad injury keeping Coleman-Jones out last weekend, and Noble wasn’t convinced the VFL, where the Kangaroos are 17th on the ladder with two wins from eight games, was providing the best path back. Having sent Stephenson back to increase his intensity, Noble said he had to look for other things in his game to consider him for senior selection. “It’s difficult to generate that intensity and pressure at times with VFL, the standard is difficult and awkward at times,” Noble said. “We saw a fair bit of his run from back to forward on the weekend. He’s certainly put himself back in the frame.”

PORT ADELAIDE

Orazio Fantasia – Quad – Assess

Scott Lycett – Shoulder – 6-7 weeks

Trent McKenzie – Knee – 1 week

Jake Pasini – Knee – Inactive

Josh Sinn – Groin – 7-9 weeks

Sam Skinner – Concussion – 1 week

Port Adelaide “will leave no stone unturned” to try to solve Orazio Fantasia’s injury problems, Power general manager football Chris Davies says, after the livewire suffered another setback.

Fantasia’s first game of the season for Port in the SANFL on Saturday lasted just minutes after he hurt his quad in the first quarter against North Adelaide.

He had an MRI on Sunday evening, which has confirmed a strained quad.

The Power are yet to have a full timeline on the 26-year-old’s return to training and games.

Davies said the Power now needed to be cautious with Fantasia in the second half of the season as they try and break into the top eight.

Premiership captain Shannon Hurn is expected to fly to Adelaide to face the Crows on Saturday, with Simpson teasing a small cavalry is coming to provide a much-needed boost for the club after the mid-season bye in round 13.

But Sheed, returning from an ankle injury, and Yeo, who exited concussion and COVID protocols, are unlikely to be rushed back against the Crows.

Defender Jeremy McGovern has avoided a major back injury after being subbed out in the 101-point loss to the Western Bulldogs but did not train on Monday.
