How trading of future picks impacts 2017 draft order following very busy AFL trade period

Aside from adding a tough goalkicking midfield to their list, the Tigers have an added incentive for hoping Geelong doesn’t have its best season in 2017.

As part of the deal with GWS for Brett Deledio, Richmond is now the proud owner of the Cats’ first-round pick in next year’s draft (which Geelong sent to Carlton as part of the Zach Tuohy swap. It was then traded to the Giants as part of the deal for Caleb Marchbank).

Meaning the lower the Cats finish on the ladder — say it misses the finals — the better the draft pick will be for the Tigers.

Trading future picks has opened a whole new can of worms, which can be bewildering for the average footy fan. The important thing to know is how it leaves your club placed for next year’s draft (and trade period) and who you should be barracking against in 2017.

St Kilda is hoping the Hawks crash and turn their first pick next year — now with the Saints — into a top-10 selection.

The Giants have another scary draft bonanza coming after harvesting four future picks (and giving away one), while Gold Coast already has five top-40 picks in next year’s draft in addition to next month’s bounty of picks 4, 6, 8 and 10. The Suns own Richmond, Fremantle and Hawthorn’s second-round selections as well as their own.

Port Adelaide, in contrast, is putting all its chips on this year’s draft, improving its position by trading away its first-round pick next year to the Lions.
