Likely No.1 AFL draft pick Harley Reid has labelled the trade period as “crazy” as West Coast and North Melbourne haggle over his future again denying he told the Eagles he wouldn’t move west.
The 18-year-old Victorian is certain to be the first name called at the draft on November 20, with West Coast holding the first pick and the Kangaroos second.
It’s understood North, who also have pick 3, are trying to strike a deal for the No.1 pick, as are other clubs, with Melbourne also touted as interested in snaring Reid.
While the Eagles have not yet declared the top pick is on the table, Reid denied reports he or his manager told West Coast he‘d prefer to remain in Victoria.
“When it’s not true, it’s amusing,” Reid said on Wednesday.
“You think more to the people in your circle of trust – you know what you’ve said, your manager knows what you’ve said.
“Even West Coast know that I didn’t say it.
“If it is West Coast or if it is North, I would love to get in there and influence the team, to turn them around and be a part of the process that puts them back into finals footy.
“There are all those little percenters in earning respect … (but) I would love to be a part of a team that is not there (finals) at the moment.
“I would love to be a part of the process to turn them around.”
Reid said he remained in the dark about what clubs were up to as he awaited his destination.
“It’s a crazy trade period, so who knows what will happen – there’s a lot of uncertainty,” Reid told SEN.
“But, again, what happens happens and to have the opportunity in the first place is obviously huge and to experience getting drafted will be something I’ll cherish forever.”
Amid several reports about the fate of the No.1 pick, it’s been reported West Coast wouldn’t exchange it for anything other than North’s picks 2 and 3 and are keen to take Reid.
