CAN Gary Ablett claim a record fifth AFL MVP Award?

The Gold Coast captain last year became the first player to be named the players' choice as the league's most valuable player four times.

He's a big chance to add another Leigh Matthews Trophy to his cabinet at tonight's event at Docklands.

WATCH THE AWARDS LIVE ON FOX FOOTY FROM 9.30PM

But Ablett will face stiff competition from the likes of Geelong captain Joel Selwood, Magpie star Scott Pendlebury and Hawk Sam Mitchell.

A series of other awards will also be presented tonight including the Robert Rose Most Courageous Award, Best First Year Player, and Best Captain.

Last year Bomber Jobe Watson was named the AFL's best captain - can he go back-to-back after Essendon's scandal-tarnished season?

The ceremony will also feature the first 22UNDER22 team, a line-up of the AFL's best young players picked by fans on social media.

“As a player you strive for the respect of your peers, and unlike other awards the MVP is determined by the men who take to the field alongside you each week," AFL Players’ Association President Luke Ball said..

“Players get to see what occurs behind the scenes. From long nights on the track, to game day and the strategic work put into stopping an opposition player, so we are very well positioned to judge the Most Valuable Player in the league."

HOW IT WORKS

Every player is asked to vote for three teammates he considers to have been the most valuable this season. Each club’ votes are then tallied to form a nomination list comprising 54 players across the 18 teams.

In the second round of voting, all AFL players vote for their MVP on a 3, 2, 1 basis from amongst the nominees from all 17 other clubs. The votes are tallied, and the player with the highest score wins the honour of MVP.
