A Gold Coast Suns Academy ace, a pair of Carlton father-son prospects and a potential No. 1 draft pick for 2025 were among the standout performers in the opening match of the AFL under-18 national championships on Sunday.

South Australia took the points against the Allies at Thebarton Oval, 13.9 (87) to 11.9 (75).

Scores were level at three-quarter time, before two final-term goals from Adelaide father-son prospect Tyler Welsh helped the home side across the line.

Welsh – the son of former Crows hero Scott – finished with three goals from six disposals and two marks.

However, it was a bottom-age player who shone brightest for South Australia.

Tough inside midfielder Dyson Sharp – who is not draft eligible until 2025 – racked up 25 disposals, five marks, nine clearances, seven tackles and six score involvements.

The performance saw Sharp finish as the top-ranked player on the ground with a mammoth 167 SuperCoach ranking points.

Twins Ben Camporeale (27 disposals, five clearances) and Lucas Camporeale (23 disposals, five marks) were also both impressive for South Australia.

The Glenelg products are the sons of Carlton 1995 premiership player Scott Camporeale and are both eligible to be father-son selections for the Blues this year.

For the Allies, Gold Coast Suns Academy star Leo Lombard led the way through the midfield with 27 disposals, seven clearances, five tackles and one goal for a total of 140 ranking points.

Brisbane Lions Academy member Sam Marshall was also prolific with 29 disposals, seven marks, four clearances and six score involvements for 146 ranking points.

The Allies face Western Australia in the second match of the tournament at Blacktown on Sunday, with South Australia’s next match coming against Vic Country on June 9.
