ROSS Lyon has personally intervened in Lachie Weller’s trade to the Gold Coast, adamant he will stay unless Fremantle receives the Suns’ No.2 overall pick.
Weller has been offered a five-year, $4 million deal to move back to the city in which he spent his formative years despite a year to run on his contract.
But the Herald Sun understands senior coach Lyon’s stance is backed by senior figures at the club given Weller’s immense talent.

Lyon believes the Dockers cannot afford to lose a player he believes is Fremantle’s best ball user and best runner.
It means Gold Coast’s offer, which would have handed the Dockers GWS defender Nathan Wilson, Sun Brandon Matera and a second-round pick, will fall on deaf ears.
The Suns are hoping common sense will prevail before Thursday’s 2pm deadline, given Weller wants to join his parents on the Gold Coast.
But the Dockers, only told of his wish to be traded last Friday, had believed he was content given he had plans to build a house in Western Australia and sign a contract extension.
The Dockers could hold him to his contract and hope to change his mind about making Fremantle his long-term home.
However, Weller said going back to Fremantle “would be pretty tough”.
“That’s why I really want to get it done now. I suppose if it doesn’t happen I’ll just play out my 12 months and move straight back.
“I think there is a really good deal they (Gold Coast) have offered Fremantle already,” he said.
“I think it is pretty silly that they don’t take it. Gold Coast are pretty keen and they have given me pretty good word that they will get it done.”
The Dockers hope to separately satisfy GWS for electric half-back Wilson using a 2018 second-round pick.
Weller is the first homegrown player that has wanted to return to the Gold Coast, which is why securing him is such an important symbolic move.
On Wednesday, the Suns traded for Adelaide’s Harrison Wigg, who has excelled as an inside midfielder in the SANFL this year.
They hope he can follow in the footsteps of ex-Adelaide revelation Jarryd Lyons, having traded him for pick No.39 and receiving pick No.54 and a future fourth-round pick.
Fremantle is not interested in any third-party deals which would involve St Kilda’s picks seven and eight in the deal.
One potential trade could have seen the Saints secure Gold Coast’s picks two and 21 for picks seven and eight, with the Suns then on-trading selection seven for Weller.
But Fremantle reasons that while pick two is a sure-fire draft selection, many later top-10 picks are still busts.
Gold Coast secured four top-10 picks this year and only Ben Ainsworth of them stood out as a guaranteed prospect.
Weller, who told the AFL website he has his head around departing, had been negotiating a four-year contract extension mid-year.
