GARY Ablett will lead Gold Coast against an Essendon team featuring 10 new players on Saturday.

Ablett was named in Gold Coast’s team to face a new-look Bombers line-up.

Essendon’s team includes replacement players Matt Dea, Jonathan Simpkin, Mathew Stokes, Ryan Crowley and James Kelly, recruits Matthew Leuenberger and Craig Bird, top draftee Darcy Parish and promoted rookie Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti.

In other team news, Adam Treloar will play his first game for Collingwood, Steve Johnson will make his GWS debut and Jed Anderson has been named by North Melbourne.

A host of players will play their first AFL games including Brisbane’s Josh Schache, Saint Jade Gresham, Bulldog Marcus Adams and Swans trio Callum Mills, Tom Papley and George Hewett.

The Suns also named mature-age recruit Ryan Davis after he was upgraded from the rookie list today.

Patrick Dangerfield will play his first game as a Cat on Easter Monday.

Gold Coast’s Ryan Davis is set to play his first AFL game since Round 21 2009 when he lines up Essendon on Saturday.

The 26-year-old earned promotion to the Suns senior list after kicking four goals in three NAB Challenge matches.

“I’m over the moon. Finally get a second chance, it’s been a long six years so looking forward to getting another crack at it,” Davis told the club’s website.

“Just the intensity, tackle pressure and hopefully get a couple of snaggers for the boys as well,” he said.

Sydney will unleash Callum Mills in its blockbuster against Collingwood, while a North Melbourne veteran is set to make long-awaited return.

It’s just reward for the Swans academy product who averaged 88 SuperCoach points in three NAB Challenge appearances.

Mills, 18, is expected to line up across half-back for the season-opener.

“I’m really glad that I’m getting the opportunity on Saturday to run out with 21 great blokes and I think that hopefully we can put on a good performance together to get a win over the Pies,” he said.

Mills has worked closely with retired Swan-turned-development manager Rhyce Shaw and injured co-captain Jarrad McVeigh during his short time at the club.

“Rhyce has been great for the club as a development manager ... he was a great player and I really want to step into his shoes.”
