WHERE does your team sit after Round 10 of the 2016 season?
Jon Anderson takes a closer look at every club.
1. North Melbourne 36 pts 124.2%
North’s perceived advantage, its tall forwards — Ben Brown, Drew Petrie and Jarrad Waite — became its Achilles heel. And its midfield had its pants removed. But how often will the Roos’ guns all play so badly?
2. Sydney 32 pts 143.8%
No midfield bats deeper than Hannebery, Jack, Kennedy, Lloyd, McVeigh, Mitchell and Parker. But with a challenging draw, beating sides such as North at the SCG is vital.
3. Geelong 28 pts 142.1%
Surely set a club record for missed tackles in a game where Geelong mastered the dubious art-form of handballing to a teammate under more pressure. Horrible to watch.
4. GWS 28 pts 138.7%
A perfect dress rehearsal for September, finals-like atmosphere, parochial crowd. And while the Giants flunked, it’s part of their schooling where they are rapidly moving from crayons to premierships.
5. West Coast 28 pts 137.6%
Kennedy and Buddy can settle down to an old fashioned Coleman medal shootout, a la Dunstall-Lockett and Hudson-Wade. Think the Eagles might still have some September, or even October, upside.
6. Bulldogs 28 pts 134.4%
What looked comfortable in the finish was decidedly awkward at times, but hey, right now it’s all about winning. Dunkley looks a player while Suckling proved the value of recruiting good kicks.
7. Hawthorn 28 pts 107/6%
Breust, Gunston and Smith aside, so often the rest of the Hawks’ best players are the ageing guns. So it needs more from a player like Hartung who should now be ready.
8. Adelaide 24 pts 119.1%
So vital in terms of keeping the circling wolves at bay, but does Adelaide have the overall cream? Lever and Talia rival any tall defensive 1-2 in the game which is massive long-term.
9. Melbourne 20 pts 107.3%
Suspect Melbourne is short of St Kilda and Collingwood in terms of readiness. At least you rarely get blowouts. Have to find a way to reverse W-L-W-L-W-L of last six weeks.
10. Port Adelaide 20 pts 105.2%
Port is primed to make a September run but can’t see any of the incumbents dropping out, meaning teams like them, Richmond and Collingwood are going to rue early inadequacies.
11. Carlton 20 pts 81%
Just a wondrous continuation of an exciting build. When it comes to brave wins the Blues can enter this in their history books. How many sides have pressured or tackled better this year?
12. Collingwood 16 pts 92.7%
Impressive early and brave late, suspect if Pies stayed fit they won. There was enough to suggest the future can still be bright, but it ain’t going to be 2016 due to injury and early ineptitude.
13. St Kilda 16 pts 89.5%
Smart recruiting has provided cornerstone forwards in Bruce, McCartin and Membrey who should be around for their finals campaign, one that hopefully is sooner than many of us realised.
14. Richmond 16 pts 86.6%
Edwards gaining metres, Brandon Ellis, Grigg and Miles getting their share and the big three in Cotchin, Deledio and Martin vying for best. All pointing towards happiness.
15. Gold Coast 12 pts 70.8%
The scoreboard did them few favours and if and when they get their numbers back, get set for a massive upset or two. Ablett and Prestia displayed enough to suggest peak output is close.
16. Brisbane 4 pts 62.3%
Brisbane’s bottom four was poor to shocking but it got a significant lift from players such as Christensen, Taylor, Mayes and Bell. Very hard to get a comprehensive read on this outfit.
17. Essendon 4 pts 60.2%
Another effort that far surpassed pre-season predictions. Reality says this group has actually over-achieved and deserves enormous credit for largely being competitive.
18. Fremantle 0 pts 68.2%
Ballantyne is almost likeable such is his fall from grace. Now if Freo really is tanking then losing to Essendon next week in Perth would provide compelling evidence. But tanking doesn’t exist, does it Andrew (Demetriou)?
