3/4 TIME: Melbourne 27 trails Collingwood 87
COLLINGWOOD threatened to demoralise Melbourne in the third quarter kicking the first four goals of the term.
Harry O'Brien opened the floodgates making the most of a turnover to race into an open goal.
When Ben Kennedy kicked his first and Dane Swan marked unopposed 30m out the writing was on the wall for the Demons.
But the embattled club hit back, Jack Trengove taking a nice mark to set up the Demons second goal, 58 minutes apart, midway through the term.
Speedster Sam Blease then made it two in-a-row bursting inside-50 for the Demons' third.
The mini-fight back was short-lived when Magpie Travis Cloke marked strong in front of goal only to be dumped by Demon Colin Garland.
The umpire awarded a 50m penalty making it a certainty and a 10-goal margin at the final change.
1/2 TIME: Melbourne 13 trails Collingwood 53
IT was only a matter of time before Collingwood clicked into gear belting Melbourne into submission.
The Magpies piled on six unanswered goals in the second quarter to set up a 40-point lead at the main change.
Second-gamer Kyle Martin booted two in a minute while Dane Swan (22 disposals) had it all his own way in the midfield.
Melbourne had no answers for the Magpies charge managing just two behinds.
The Demons have their injuries problems too with Chris Dawes (leg) and Dean Terlich (thigh) spending time off the ground.
1/4 TIME: Melbourne 11 trails Collingwood 12
A DEFIANT Melbourne weathered Collingwood's early onslaught to draw within a point at quarter-time.
Magpie Travis Cloke opened the scoring kicking a long goal from 50m in the opening minutes.
But from there it was all Melbourne with Colin Sylvia, Nathan Jones, Colin Garland and Matt Jones leading the fight back.
The Demons out-pointed the Magpies in most stats categories including inside-50s, clearances and tackles.
Melbourne's reward for effort came late in the term when speedster Aaron Davey danced around two opponents to slot the Demons opening goal.
Collingwood star Dane Swan was busy racking up 11 disposals. He averages 33 disposals per game against Melbourne.
Meanwhile, Magpie Quinten Lynch's woes in front of goal continued with the one-time superboot kicking three behinds including a howler from 20m directly in front.
