Eddie McGuire scolded by Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley

Eddie McGuire has been publicly chastised by Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley for inflammatory comments about an AFL rival.

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has taken the extraordinary step of publicly reprimanding president Eddie McGuire for his comments about rival Carlton this week.

Buckley on Wednesday took issue with McGuire’s suggestion that the Blues should be trying to meet with Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson amid pressure on under fire coach Brendon Bolton following the club’s disastrous loss to North Melbourne.

McGuire said this week Carlton should be trying to sit down with four-time premiership coach Clarkson, as the Blues board of directors prepares to meet to discuss Bolton’s coaching tenure.

It was suggested earlier this week that the Blues’ board’s confidence in Bolton would have been rocked by the manner of the loss to the Kangaroos.

McGuire’s inflammatory suggestion was out of line, according to Buckley.

The Magpies’ mentor said it is not in line with the club’s values to be speaking about another club’s coaching circus.

However, Buckley, did soften his view because McGuire made his comments on Triple M Radio as part of his regular media commitments — not as part of his ongoing role as Collingwood president.

“I’m not across that so I don’t know, but I’m glad that you said his ‘media guise’ because if it was with his Collingwood hat on it would be inconsistent with the way we want to carry ourselves and the way we view our respect and understanding of the fact that competition’s important and we’ve got places and things to talk about and things to let go,” Buckley said on SEN radio.

“I’m sure that that would add to the mix or the fuel in some shape or form but it’s largely irrelevant for us when we hit the field.”

about McGuire’s suggestion.

The Herald Sun reports Carlton president Mark LoGuidice has shrugged off McGuire’s commentary.

Despite the public criticism, McGuire staunchly defended himself on Wednesday.

“There’s no need to [clarify my comment] because they’ve actually got ears at Carlton as opposed to the clickbait members of my community of journalists who just go nuts over these things and then agree and think it’s not a bad proposition,” McGuire said.

“I think sometimes we have to differentiate the position of someone who’s doing a radio show and talking as an expert commentator, which is no different to having a current-day footballer giving expert comments on a game they’re not playing in between two sides they don’t play for.

“I think we’re all big enough to understand the roles everybody plays and not look at it like it is malicious, but as part of the commentary of what we do.

“It’s the sort of talk that would be happening at every pub and office, but what I and Jeff [Kennett] try to do in my role in the media is give an understanding of what goes on maybe behind the scenes.

“It’s called giving an insight into the game.”

McGuire started the whole storm by suggesting Clarkson would be the best option to lead the young Blues back to finals football.

“If you’re on the board of the Carlton Football Club it’s the best of times and the worst of times at the moment because if the Blues get another No.1 pick or an early pick they’re going to have a pretty good line-up in the next few years,” McGuire told Triple M.

“So as much as you’re hanging on there, there is a bit of blue sky.

They’re a happy team at Hawthorn.

“If you had a blank canvas and the situation was there, if you’re Mark LoGuidice you’d probably be having breakfast in the next little period of time with Alastair Clarkson, wouldn’t you, because they could work together.

“Brendon Bolton I’m a huge wrap for, and people are going to go after him but he has done all the hard work.

“Now, they’ve worked together [at Hawthorn].”

“Clarko has already said he’s staying at Hawthorn. I’m saying in the best possible world, that is the type of person you’d want to get. It makes Carlton a destination club as well.

“If you realised when Richmond came good how annoying they are, you just wait until Carlton comes good. I don’t want to give them any advice at all that might make them in any way decent.

“Carlton have got this great young list coming through, and they’ve got a great teacher at the moment and I reckon he is doing a really good job at the moment but Carlton is a big club and it needs a big personality again.”
