Carlton cult hero Eddie Betts has officially told the Blues he wants back in.

Now comes the complicated task of working out how the man beloved to Blues fans fits into their list management picture.

The Herald Sun understands that Betts has made clear to the Blues he would like to play with them in 2020 after weeks of speculation.

On Friday his management told Gold Coast he would not take up their two-year offer to move north.

Betts would sell thousands of memberships and fill the aisles at Marvel Stadium in one of footy’s most popular moves back to the club that gave him his start.

But Carlton will now have to work through not only whether they desperately want him, and what kind of deal would satisfy him given his hefty $500,000 plus salary for 2020.

Gold Coast’s Jack Martin has already nominated Carlton and Tom Papley has had a tour of the Blues’ facilities as rival clubs including North Melbourne push for his services.

Both Papley and Betts kicked 37 goals last year, but Papley is a dynamic young Sydney star on the rise and Betts turns 33 in November.

Given Adelaide isn’t desperate to hold onto Betts satisfying them with a later draft pick would be possible, with Carlton having selections eight, 39, 44, 71 and 80.

The Blues would likely have to hand over their No.8 pick as part of a trade for Papley, who Sydney still maintains will not go anywhere.

It is expected the Swans might relent if they eventually broker a trade for Joe Daniher, whose future remains in limbo.

Hugh Greenwood wants to remain an Adelaide player as rival clubs continue to circle the out-of-contract midfielder.

Greenwood, 27, is in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his American partner as he awaits word from the besieged Crows.

He is chasing a four-year deal, or a three-year offer with a trigger, to stay with the club.

Greenwood has held talks with Hawthorn, Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast about his playing future after St Kilda’s coaching uncertainty prior to Brett Ratten’s appointment saw him cool on Moorabbin.

The Suns are confident they can land Greenwood after convincing Brandon Ellis to move north.

Greenwood hasn’t set a monetary threshold to stay at Adelaide, but is chasing a longer term.

Whether or not he stays at Adelaide will depend on what other players leave the club as it conducts twin reviews into its football operations after Don Pyke’s departure.

Betts, Sam Jacobs, Alex Keath and Josh Jenkins are set to depart in the upcoming exchange period, while Brad Crouch is chasing a five-year deal to stay.
