AFL Draft: Famous names headline U17 future stars showcase games

The under-17 futures clash on AFL grand final day is a great draft indicator – but who will play? 117 young guns, including some famous names, will make their case on Sunday.

A trio of famous names and some of the brightest talents in football’s next generation will bid for a chance to play on AFL grand final day this Sunday.

The eastern seaboard’s most promising under-17 boys players will step out at Avalon Airport Oval in Werribee in a future stars showcase.

Among the boys looking to impress who have football in their blood are River Stevens (son of North Melbourne champion Anthony), Daniel Snell (son of former Cat Jason) and Zai Millane (nephew of Collingwood legend Darren).

Stevens, who plays for the Geelong Falcons and has a left boot just like his old man, will be eligible to be snared by the Roos as a father-son, given Anthony played 292 games for North Melbourne, which included two flags.

Snell is not eligible as a father-son selection, given Jason played 68 promising games for the Cats before a horrific broken leg ended his career.

Young Millane is a member of Gold Coast’s academy and the 189cm onballer has shown great promise as a hybrid midfielder or half-forward.

Vic Metro will tackle New South Wales/ACT on Sunday morning before Vic Country faces Queensland.

Standout players will get the chance to play on the greatest stage of all, with the AFL to put on a futures game as a curtain-raiser to the AFL grand final on the MCG in September.
