Dion Prestia will return to Gold Coast Suns if no trade can be struck with Richmond

GOLD Coast star Dion Prestia is no certainty to play for Richmond next season with the clubs at odds over his trade worth.

GOLD Coast star Dion Prestia is no certainty to play for Richmond next season with the clubs at odds over his trade worth.

The Herald Sun understands that if a deal cannot be struck by next week’s deadline, Prestia will sign a new contract and return to the Suns.

Gold Coast wants to swap Prestia for the No.6 draft pick, but the Tigers are only willing to part with the prized selection if they receive something else in return.

The Suns hold picks 4, 8, 22, 24, 26, 30 and 44.

If Richmond coughed up No.6 in isolation it would choose just twice inside the top 60 — a weak draft hand for a club that missed the finals.

The Tigers currently hold pick 6, 27 (received as compensation for losing Tyrone Vickery) and 44.

Prestia, 24, has told those close to him that he is open to a Metricon Stadium return.

The Suns are aware they could retain him and are believed to be pleased with his transparency as he came out of contract this year.

Prestia staying shapes as an awkward outcome for the Tigers, who have long struggled to sign big names.

Richmond was trumped by Collingwood for Adam Treloar last year and previously missed out on St Kilda’s David Armitage.

If a trade is struck, Prestia has committed to the Tigers on a lucrative contract that would tie him to Punt Rd until 2021.

Former Port Adelaide star Kane Cornes believes the Tigers should hold onto their early draft pick.

“They seem to think they are a Dion Prestia away from a final series, but I don’t see that at all,” Cornes said last month.

The Tigers are chasing Geelong’s Josh Caddy should superstar Brett Deledio leave.

But Deledio will not line up for the Western Bulldogs next season, despite reported interest.
