Footy cult hero Dane Swan has revealed the scariest phone call he ever received from Collingwood president Eddie Maguire in a moment he will never forget.

The former Brownlow medallist revealed his moment of panic in his latest Scotty and Swanny Podcast.

Discussing the off-field behaviour of AFL players in the off-season, Swan revealed he was able to get away with a lot more trouble than what he was publicly credited for during his impressive career with the Magpies.

He said some of the stories that have never made the light of day would have been enough to end his football career.

Thankfully for him, his indiscretions stayed out of the spot light.

“A lot of stuff did come out but, to the footy club’s credit, they pushed around a lot of stuff for me, which was nice,” Swan said.

“There was a couple there towards the back end of the career (where the club said), ‘If this makes the media, we won’t be able to save you’.

“So there was a couple of nervous sleeps when the media was sniffing around.”

Bizarrely, it was a moment of misunderstanding which actually led to his scariest moment with Maguire.

Swan told the podcast he woke up on a Monday morning following the 2015 AFL grand final between Hawthorn and West Coast that and immediately collapsed into a panic when he saw he had a hundred unread text messages on his phone.

Dane Swan says several things could have ended his career early.

Then he really started to sweat when he saw Maguire’s name pop up on his screen.

He said he took a moment to compose himself then called back his boss, fearing his career was about to come to end, but wanting to face the music head on.

“I said, ‘Ed’. He said: ‘Hey mate, have you heard the news,’” Swan said.

“I was like, ‘Na mate, give it to me’. I thought this was the end of my career.

“He said: ‘Your pub’s burnt down.’ I said: ‘Did I do it?’.

“He said no and I was like, ‘Is that it? Thank f*** for that. I thought it was something bad’.

“I turned the phone off and had the best eight hours of sleep of my life.

“I actually did nothing wrong that day, it’s happened a couple of times where I have been in trouble and it’s very, very scary.”

There was never a dull moment when it came to the career of the 34-year-old.

We may have to wait until the next podcast to learn about the antics that could have ended his career.
