Hutchy's Trade Radio gaffe

CROCMEDIA boss Craig Hutchison has apologised to listeners and admitted he scored an “own goal” after a private conversation with journalist Damian Barrett was mistakenly aired on NAB AFL Trade Radio this morning.

Barrett and Hutchison were discussing the rundown for the next episode of their podcast when Barrett was notified of the gaffe.

“Oh … we’ve got a problem here,” Barrett could be heard telling Hutchison.

“Cam Noakes (production editor at AFL.com.au) has just texted me. Our conversation is on Trade Radio.”

Hutchison later addressed the gaffe on his podcast, The Sounding Board, which was released several hours after their Trade Radio mishap.

“We apologise to anyone that was displaced by that unfortunate little own goal this morning,” he said.

While Hutchison was sheepish about the situation, he also admitted the outcome could’ve been a lot worse.

“Given how a standard five-minute conversation between you and I … we could potentially bag 20 to 30 people, I think we probably take the positive out of this,” Hutchison said.

“I didn’t want to listen back to it, myself,” Barrett said.

“But they tell me there’s nothing in it, Hutchy.”

Listeners were quick to point out the blunder on social media, with one Twitter user describing the exchange as “probably the most interesting thing broadcast on #NABTradeRadio for the past few days”.

“There’s not a lot of sympathy for either of us too, I noticed, on social. People are pinging us left right and centre. That’s what happens … It’s a great lesson,” Hutchison said.

“I remember Stephen Quartermain telling me on my first day on TV back in 1997 … any time you see a microphone, you should always assume it’s live. Now, I think that extends to mobile phones, too.”

TRANSCRIPT:

Barrett: I’ll just say I’ve been told … that’s what I’ve been told where you are, and …

Hutchison: Can you hear the water in the background?

Barrett: I can actually, now you mention it. It’s lapping the boat, is it?

Barrett: There’s a reference here in Johnno’s rundown to Robert Walls saying that he predicted the Eagles to win the wooden spoon. Are you comfortable if I was to say that?

Hutchison: Yeah.

Barrett: Because you said that at the Footy Classified meeting first up this year, from memory.

Hutchison: Nah, I said they’d finish 17th.

Barrett: Oh … we’ve got a problem here.

Hutchison: What’s wrong?

Barrett: Cam Noakes (production editor at AFL.com.au) has just texted me. Our conversation is on Trade Radio.
