COLLINGWOOD says Patrick Karnezis can be an "elite" third forward who can transform into a top-line midfielder.
The 21-year-old was traded today from the Brisbane Lions to the Magpies in a straight swap for young forward Jackson Paine.
Karnezis, who grew up supporting Collingwood, played 21 games in three seasons in Brisbane after being selected at pick 25 in the 2010 national draft.
"We see Patrick as a very versatile talent," Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine said, adding Karnezis showed glimpses of his "elite ability" with the Lions.
"At 190cm tall he has played third forward, wing and quite a bit of midfield which is where we see a lot of scope for Patrick in the years ahead.
"He is unquestionably a talented footballer and I think that with the understanding he now has of what is required, after three years in the system, and the opportunity to start over we could see some pretty rapid progress in his game."
Karnezis, who moved to Melbourne in September in anticipation of a move, said he was thrilled the deal finally went through.
"I’m thrilled to be home and at Collingwood," he said.
"I grew up in Melbourne a passionate Collingwood supporter, as all my family are. To get not only a new start but a new start with Collingwood is the perfect outcome. I’ve got a challenge in front of me, I know that. But I can’t wait to get started."
Hine said Paine left with the Magpies' best wishes.
"A couple of shoulder operations didn’t help his cause. He didn’t have much luck in that regard but he was always dedicated and professional and someone who gave it all he had. I’m sure he will be able to take his opportunity in Brisbane."
