COLLINGWOOD will demand a player of the calibre of Adelaide’s Patrick Dangerfield if they lose Dayne Beams to Brisbane.

The Pies will fight to retain Beams, who wants to move home close to his sick father, but are long odds to keep the 24-year-old.

A three-way deal raised by one party would see Dangerfield head to the Pies, Brisbane’s pick No.4 as well as more picks or players go to Adelaide, and Beams find his way to the Gabba.

Collingwood is adamant Brisbane and Beams’ manager Paul Connors must come to them with the deal of a lifetime to lure the Pies’ second-best player.

They last night scoffed at suggestions pick No.4 or ruckman Matthew Leuenberger would be sufficient.

Instead they believe receiving a player of the star power of Dangerfield is the only way to clinch the deal.

Three Melbourne clubs have made inquiries about Dangerfield since Adelaide powerbroker Mark Ricciuto’s claimed last week he might be tradeable.

Dangerfield, also managed by Connors, is contracted until next year but has made public his desire to wait until next season to decide his future.

Adelaide could receive only a mid-teens pick if he walked as a free agent next year but could receive pick No.4 and another pick or Leuenberger if they traded him now.

Those close to Dangerfield believe he will stay but he is said to be miffed with the recent questioning of his loyalty and links to the sacking of Brenton Sanderson.

He said he loved Adelaide but until he commits rivals will continue to circle.

Brisbane has all but given up on securing Patrick Ryder — who they expect to go to Port Adelaide — and will throw all resources at Beams.

Ryder yesterday met with Power coach Ken Hinkley, who believes he can lure the Essendon ruckman with the club’s first-round pick.

The Pies believe Brisbane’s list contains almost no players as a suitable replacement for Beams, with the likes of Tom Rockliff, James Aish and Daniel Rich considered off limits.

Brisbane’s Pearce Hanley has also been mentioned as a part of the Beams trade.

Beams has told Collingwood he will only go to Brisbane to play with his brother Claye, but Gold Coast recruiter Scott Clayton said yesterday the Suns were also keen.

Collingwood believes the Suns’ star-studded young midfield — including Jaeger O’Meara, David Swallow and Dion Prestia — has much more appeal from a trade perspective.

Clayton said yesterday his club would investigate whether his club was a possible location for Beams, whose played for Southport, where his father lives on the Gold Coast.

“We will obviously investigate the situation as a matter of course. We do due diligence on players like him. The whole basis of our list build has been about player retention and keeping our core group but you investigate everything,” he told the Herald Sun.

McGuire said yesterday the Pies were not suspicious of Beams’ motives, despite Brisbane offering him a five-year $4 million deal before he told Collingwood.

“I am keenly aware of his personal situation. It is all about his personal situation. These are bigger stakes than to use it as leverage to leave the club,’’ he said.

“If someone came in and tried to use it as leverage we would use the law and contracts in our favour. This is a humanitarian situation and we will approach it that way.”
